(Wanshang Hua Niao Yu Chong Shichang; South Xizang Rd; Laoximen) One of few remaining traditional markets in town, this spot is a fascinating experience. Wander among the roar of crickets, interlaced with snatches of birdsong, to a backdrop of multicoloured fish flitting about. Crickets come in a variety of sizes and are sold in woven bamboo cages; nab one for under Y30.

Dongjiadu Cathedral Church

(Dongjiadu Jiaotang; 185 Dongjiadu Rd; 185 Nanpu Bridge) Just outside the Old Town and once known as St Francis Xavier Church, this magnificent whitewashed cathedral is Shanghai’s oldest church, built by Spanish Jesuits in 1853. A splendid sight, the church was located within a famously Catholic area of Shanghai and is generally open if you want to view the well-kept interior (ring the bell at the side door). Look out for the oil painting of a Chinese-looking infant Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Follow Dongjiadu Rd west for an absorbing stroll through the bustling garment district.
