( 6322 3673; 603 Fuzhou Rd; 603 dishes Y18-148, set menu from Y450; People’s Sq) Over 250 years old, this restaurant’s fame rests on its extravagant selection of crab dishes; its popularity reaches an apex during hairy-crab season (October to December). Most diners opt for one of the all-crabs-must-die banquets, but if you’re new to hairy crab, you might want to give it a try elsewhere before shelling out for an eight-course meal. Reserve.
The Bund & People’s Square Sights | Eating | Entertainment | Shopping Drinking & Nightlife
The Bund is home to some of Shanghai’s premier drinking spots that jump at the weekends. These are places to get dressed up for and the drinks don’t come cheap. But a trip to at least one of these bars is obligatory, if only for the stunning night-time view of the Huangpu River and the glittering lights of Pudong.
Identity & the Shanghai Dialect
Older Shanghainese are very conscious of the disappearance of their cherished Shanghai dialect (Shanghaihua), under assault from the increased promotion of the Mandarin (Putonghua) dialect and the flood of immigrant tongues. As a deeply tribal element of Shanghai culture and heritage, the disappearance of the slightly Japanese-sounding dialect equals a loss of identity. Fewer and fewer young Shanghainese are now able to speak the pure form of the dialect. Youngsters might not care, but older Shanghainese agonise over the dialect’s slow extinction. The most perfectly preserved forms of Shanghaihua survive in rural areas around Shanghai, where Mandarin has less of a toehold. The Shanghainese may remind themselves of the Chinese idiom – jiude bu qu, xinde bu lai (‘If the old doesn’t go, the new doesn’t arrive’) – but it may offer scant consolation.
