The highlight is the 3rd floor, where you’ll find Shanghai’s idealised future (c 2020), with an incredible model layout of the megalopolis-to-come, plus a dizzying Virtual World 3D wraparound tour.

Balancing out the forward-looking exhibits are photos and maps of historic Shanghai.

Leo Li, curator of the stylish Leo Gallery (Click here), introduced us to his favourite modern art museums and galleries in Shanghai.

» Rockbund Art Museum (Click here) A trip to this museum is recommended not only for the monumental art installations, but also for the well-restored heritage building in which it is located.

» ShanghART I love visiting this contemporary art institution (Click here). It always has avant-garde shows and exhibitions of great contemporary Chinese artists.

» James Cohan This was the first gallery (Click here) from New York to establish itself in mainland China in 2008. Its gorgeous garden villa in the heart of the French Concession is always a pleasure to visit.

» Hong Merchant Gallery This beautiful gallery (Click here) is another gallery housed in a historical villa, and displays Chinese furniture and sculpture alongside China-inspired contemporary art. Each time I come here, it feels like my ideal home.
