Best Gay Bars

The sweltering summer heat begins to kick in and rainfall in Shanghai hits its peak. | Shanghai winters are generally unpleasant, with temperatures that are cold enough to cut to the bone, but rarely chilly enough for snow. | Madame Tussauds | Practise Taichi | Shanghainese Cuisine | Opening Hours | Cooking Schools | International | Eating by Neighbourhood | Southeast Asian |

Entertainment

Shanghai is no longer the city of sin that went out dancing as the revolution shot its way into town, but the entertainment options have blossomed again over the past decade. Plug into the local cultural scene for a stimulating shot of gallery openings, music concerts and laid-back movie nights at the local bar.

Acrobatics

The Shanghai troupes are among the best in the world and spending a night watching them spinning plates on poles and contorting themselves into unfeasible anatomical positions never fails to entertain. See www.shanghaiacrobaticshow.com for an overview of performances around town.

Karaoke

Karaoke is by far China’s favourite leisure activity and karaoke places, ranging from the seedy to upmarket, probably outnumber the bars and clubs in town. If you’re up for crooning a few Mandopop tunes or you need to close out a business deal, why not start the night at Partyworld (Click here)?

Music

Shanghai had a brief heyday in the jazz spotlight, back in the 1920s and ’30s when big-band swing was the entertainment of choice. It remains a popular genre – there are more jazz clubs than rock venues – and even if you won’t catch many household names, there are some surprisingly good musicians here.

Classical music is also big, with both local and foreign orchestras performing regularly. For traditional Chinese music, check out the programs at the Oriental Art Center or Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Shanghai’s rock scene continues to evolve, though it is somewhat hamstrung by a lack of good venues. Nevertheless, a dedicated local following means that shows are often packed.
