Dragon Boat Festival

This public holiday (Duanwu Jie) is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month (12 June 2013, 2 June 2014, 20 June 2015) with boat races along the Huangpu River, Suzhou Creek and Dianshan Lake.

Shanghai International Film Festival

With screenings at various cinemas around Shanghai, the moviegoing festival (www.siff.com) brings a range of international and locally produced films to town in June.

September

The tail end of summer, this is one of the best times to visit as temperatures drop from August highs, although rainfall is still abundant.

 

Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhongqiu Jie) is the time to give and receive delicious moon cakes stuffed with bean paste, egg yolk, coconut, walnuts and the like. The festival, now a one-day public holiday, takes place on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month (19 September 2013, 8 September 2014, 27 September 2015).

October

The week-long holiday beginning 1 October (National Day) wreaks havoc throughout China. Like Chinese New Year and Labour Day, it’s best to avoid travelling at this time. If you’re headed to Shanghai, book your hotel well in advance.

 

Hairy Crabs

Now’s the time to sample delicious hairy crabs (dazhaxie) in Shanghai. They’re at their best between October and December.

Halloween

One of a handful of imported Western festivals, spooky Halloween is increasingly popular with young Chinese. Pumpkins, seasonal outfits and masks pile up at large supermarkets and stores, while parties are held at expat-oriented bars and restaurants.

Shanghai Biennale

Held once every two years (October to March 2014–15), this popular international arts festival (www.shanghaibiennale.org) takes place on the former World Expo grounds.

November

Autumn’s last gasp before winter begins.

 

China International Arts Festival

A month-long program (www.artsbird.com) of cultural events in October and November, which includes the Shanghai Art Fair, a varied program of international music, dance, opera and acrobatics, and exhibitions of the Shanghai Biennale.

Shanghai International Marathon

Usually held on the last Sunday of November, this annual event (www.shmarathon.com) attracts around 20,000 runners. It starts at the Bund and events include a half-marathon and a 4.5km ‘health race’.
