The Western New Year is celebrated in bars citywide.

Western New Year

Longhua Temple has excellent New Year (Yuandan) celebrations, with dragon and lion dances. On 1 January the abbot strikes the bell 108 times while the monks beat on gongs and offer prayers for the forthcoming year.

February

Preparations for the festive Chinese New Year are well under way as hundreds of millions of people get ready to journey home, so if you plan to do any travelling, make sure you reserve your tickets as far in advance as possible.

Chinese New Year

Commonly called the Spring Festival (Chun Jie), Chinese New Year is the equivalent of Christmas. Families get together to feast on dumplings, vegetate in front of the TV, hand out hongbao (red envelopes stuffed with money) and take a week-long holiday. New Year’s Eve fireworks can be a chaotic but good show.

The festival traditionally commences on the first day of the first moon of the traditional lunar calendar (31 January 2014, 19 February 2015, 8 February 2016), but a high-octane month-long build-up – featuring a crescendo of red and gold decorations festooning shopping malls and the inescapable onset of seasonal Cantopop ditties – gets everyone hyped up much earlier.

Lantern Festival

Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Jie) falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month (14 February 2014; 5 March 2015; 22 February 2016). Families get together, make yuan xiao (also called tang yuan; delicious dumplings of glutinous rice with a variety of sweet fillings) and sometimes hang paper lanterns. It’s a colourful time to visit Yuyuan Gardens.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day (Qingren Jie) is taken seriously by Shanghai suitors as an occasion for a massive blowout: it’s the chance to get their true love that Cartier wristwatch or diamond ring she has been hankering for, although a bunch of 11 roses could do the trick.
