Most shops are open from 10am to 10pm daily, though government-run stores often close at 6pm while smaller boutiques may not open until noon. Nonstandard opening hours are listed in the reviews. Yuyuan Bazaar and Dongtai Road Antique Market are best visited early in the day.
Haggling
If negotiating in pidgin Chinese, be very careful of similar-sounding numbers, like 14 (shisi) and 40 (sishi), and 108 (yibailingba) and 180 (yibaiba), as these offer great potential for misunderstanding, deliberate or otherwise.
Customs
Technically, nothing over 200 years old can be taken out of China, but you’ll be very lucky if you come across any antiques in Shanghai that old. If you are buying a reproduction, make sure the dealer provides paperwork stating that it is not an antique. Dealers should also provide the proper receipts and paperwork for any antiques. Keep the receipts along with the business card of the dealer, just in case.
Phrases to Know
» Duoshao qian? – How much?
» Tai gui le! – Too expensive!
» Tai xiao. – Too small.
» Tai da. – Too big.
» Bu yao. – I don’t want it.
Shipping
Most reputable shops will take care of insurance, customs and shipping for larger items, though find out first exactly what the dealer covers. Separate charges may materialise for handling, packaging, customs duty and quarantine, driving the shipping charges above the price of the item! Also consider how much it will cost to get the goods from the shipping port to your home.
Shipping clothing, curios and household items on your own is generally not a problem and China Post has an excellent packing system for airmailing light items.
