(Shishang Laomatou; www.thecooldocks.com; 479 South Zhongshan Rd; 479 Xiaonanmen) Billed as Xintiandi 2, the riverside Cool Docks consist of several shikumen (stone-gate houses) surrounded by red-brick warehouses, near (but not quite on) the waterfront. Now full of restaurants and bars and all lit up at night, the Cool Docks for long looked like a damp squib without the vibe, buzz or visitor numbers of Xintiandi, largely because of little artfulness or style in its conception. After a rash of high-profile and trendy restaurant, bar and hotel openings, business has picked up.

If the sun comes out, pop down to this amusing artificial strip of sand right by the river and north of the Cool Docks with a backdrop of Lujiazui, a bar, deckchairs, beach volleyball, Frisbee, tents and other fun beach activities (and no jellyfish).
