The Bazaar
Next to the Yuyuan Gardens entrance rises the Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse Offline map Google map (Huxinting; tea downstairs/upstairs Y25/50; 8.30am-9.30pm), once part of the gardens and now one of the most famous teahouses in China. The zigzag causeway is designed to thwart spirits, who can only travel in straight lines.
Surrounding all this is the restored bazaar area, where scores of speciality shops and restaurants – including the Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant (Click here) – jostle over narrow laneways and small squares in a mock ‘ye olde Cathay’ setting. There are some choice gift-giving ideas in the souvenir shops, from painted snuff bottles to paper and leather silhouette cuttings, delightful Chinese kites, embroidered paintings and clever palm-and-finger paintings. Despite the skill on display, the hard sell is off-putting.

At the time of writing, the former Pavilion of the Future (the disused Nanshi Power Plant) in the World Expo site on this side of the river was being unveiled as the Power Station of Art, a huge gallery space showcasing post-1980s contemporary Chinese art and venue of the Shanghai Biennale.
