Subjunctive

После словосочетаний it is time (пора бы) в значении совета; would rather / would sooner для выражения предпочтений как вежливый способ отказа или предложения.
главное предложение придаточное предложение
It is (was) time high time about time (that)+ Past Simple
I/you/he/we would rather would sooner + Past Simple Past Perfect(о прошлом)
e.g. 1. It is time we left. Пора бы нам уходить. 2. It’s about time we paida visit to our parents. Пора бы нам навестить родителей. 3. It’s high time that the voice of the people was heard in this House. 4. Этой Палате давно бы пора прислушаться к голосу народа. I’d sooner you didn’t smoke in here. Я бы предпочла, чтобы Вы здесь не курили. 5. I’d rather you hadn’t gone out yesterday. Я бы предпочла, чтобы ты никуда не ходил вчера.
Примечания: 1) после «it’s time» ·1 нельзя ставить отрицательные предложения; e.g. It’s time we didn’t stay ·1 можно также применять структуры «it’s time + to-infinitive» и «it’s time for + object + to-infinitive». e.g. I’m afraid it’s time to leave. I’m afraid it’s time for us to leave. 2) в простом предложении после would rather / would sooner ставится bare infinitive: e.g. I’d rather spend my bonus on something useful. Я бы предпочла потратить бонус на что-то полезное.
           

1. Use the correct form of the verb after the expressions “it is (about, high) time…”;“would rather / would sooner” and go on to translate the sentences:

A.

1. It’s high time the child (to be) in bed.

5. It’s high time you (to change) your opinion of him.

8. Why aren’t they back yet? Isn’t it high time they (to return)?

9. It is about time fine weather (to set in).

10.It is high time you (to begin) reviewing the material for the examination.

11.It is high time the room (to be redecorated). It looks awful.

12.It’s high time our government (to concentrate) on raising the standards of living.

13.It’s about time something (to be done) about the traffic problems in the city.

14.It’s about time you (to give) your parents a call, the must be getting worried by now.

B.

1. A: Will you do it?

B: I’d rather you (to do) it.

2. We’d sooner you (to spend) your bonus on something useful.

3. I’m not keen on the idea of staying in. I’d sooner we (to go out) clubbing or something.

4. I’d sooner you (to give) me a cash refund. A credit note’s no use to me.

5. I had rather you (not to take) the car; it’s just been cleaned.

6. I’d sooner (to die) than go out with that creep (подхалим).

7. I’d sooner we (to use) solar power to drive our cars.

8. I’d rather you (not to let) the dog sit in front of the car.

9. If they had the choice, I think they’d rather we (to go) with them.

10. A: Can I go out tonight, Mum?

B: I’d rather you (to stay) at home and (to do) your homework.

11. A: Let’s have a party this weekend.

B: I’d rather we (not to have) it this weekend. I’m busy.

12.I’ve got a terrible headache. I’d rather (to take) an aspirin.

13.I’d rather Kate (not to spend) so much money yesterday.

14.I’ll empty the rubbish bin if you really want me to, but I’d rather you (to empty) it.

15. A: Did your son enjoy the party last night?

B: No, I’d rather he (to stay) at home yesterday.

16. A: Did you enjoy the film last night?

B: Not really. I would rather we (to see) a comedy instead.

17.He’d sooner (to die) than betray his country for money.

 

2. Scott has been on holiday. He didn’t enjoy it. He had a terrible time. Look at the prompts and make sentences using “it is time…”; “would rather / would sooner”, as in the example:

e.g. I’ d rather I had enjoyed my holiday.

·1 It rained every day. ·2 The beach was a long way from the hotel. ·3 The hotel was dirty. ·4 My hotel room was not comfortable enough. ·5 My luggage was lost at the airport. ·6 My wallet was stolen. ·7 The police didn’t catch the pickpocket.
