Все типы условных предложений можно смешивать. Любая комби­нация времен возможна, если позволяет контекст предложения.

При преобразовании предложений в смешанный тип в придаточ­ных предложениях типа Conditional 2 или Conditional 3 форма вре­мени глагола сдвигается на «ступеньку» в прошлое по отношению к описываемым действиям, а в главном предложении появляется would + bare infinitive.


e.g. He doesn’t know her. That’s why he didn’t speak to her.

If he knew her, he would have spoken to her.

Он её не знает. Вот почему он не поговорил с ней.

Если бы он её знал, он бы с ней поговорил.

If he had won the lottery, he wouldn’t be askingfor money now.
Примечание В условных предложениях могут также использоваться конст­рукции but for…(= if it were not for …); а в вопросительных пред­ложения – what if…; suppose / supposing (that) …, например: 1. But for the rain, we would have gone for a picnic. Если бы не дождь, мы бы поехали на пикник. 2. What if you had never met? А что если бы Вы никогда не встретились? 3. Suppose he askedyou to marry him, what would you say? Предпо­ложим, он попросил бы тебя выйти за него замуж, что бы ты сказала? 4. Supposingyour parents had refused, how would you have felt? А если бы твои родители не согласились, как бы ты себя чувствовала?

1. Rewrite the sentences using mixed conditionals:

1. He lost his job. He’s unemployed now.

2. His pet died. That’s why he unhappy now.

3. She doesn’t have a mobile phone. That’s why she couldn’t be connected yesterday.

4. Tom didn’t see the boss earlier. He’s waiting for him now.

5. He is allergic to berries. That’s why he didn’t eat strawberries last night.

6. I lost my map. That’s why I’m asking for direction now.

7. She doesn’t speak French. She didn’t have a good time in Paris.

8. He lost the race. He is not a champion now.

9. She didn’t go to the bank yesterday. That’s why she hasn’t got any money now.

10. I crashed my car. That’s why I’m taking the bus today.

11. Bill Gates was in the right place at the right time. That’s why he is the richest man in the world now.

12. Once John Lennon and Paul McCartney met and formed the Beatles. The pop music of today is very different.

13. Oppenheimer discovered how to build an atomic bomb. The world can’t be a secure and peaceful place any more.

14. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed. They are known all over the world.

2. Read and translate the following sentences:

1. But for his friend, she would feel very lonely in the big city.

2. And what if he had been thrown out by the landlord? Where would he have gone?

3. Supposing he was caught at customs, what would you do?

4. Suppose you were a bird, would you sing in a cage?

5. What if there were no law?

6. Suppose all criminals were the product of bad homes, what would you do to prevent crime?

7. But for the quickness of the policeman, I would have been killed.

8. But for the traffic jam, we would have arrived in time.

9. Supposing I complain to the police, how would you react?

10. A: Suppose you got lost, what would you do?
