REASON FOR WRITING

Letters are written for a variety of reasons. These include: giving information; requesting
information; making complaints; making corrections; making suggestions; asking for permission; giving advice, etc.

Two or more of these reasons for writing could appear in the same letter. (e.g. Write a letter thanking someone... explaining that you have decided to... and asking for their advice on...)

STYLE

The style of writing in your letter can be formal, semi-formal or informal, depending on the rubric and the target reader. You should make sure that you keep the same style throughout your letter.

LAYOUT

All letters should include the following:

* An appropriate greeting (e.g. Dear John, Dear Sir, etc), followed by an introduction with your opening remarks (e.g. How are you, etc) and your reason for writing (e.g. I thought I would write and tell you about my holidays, etc).

* A main body which contains the information requested by the rubric

* A conclusion where you can summarise the main points and/or make reference to future action. You should include your dosing remarks (e.g. Write back soon, etc), followed by an appropriate ending (e.g. Yours faithfully, John Smith, etc)

Informal style

We usually write informal letters to friends and relatives we know well,or to people of our own age. Characteristics of informal style include:

• Short forms (e.g. I'm, you're, it's, we'll, etc)

• Simple/colloquial vocabulary (e.g. really great, fun, you'd better, etc)

• Use of the active, rather than the passive voice (e.g. 'we should do something' instead of'something should be done', etc)

• Informal beginnings and endings (e.g. Hi, how are you doing?, I'd better run, I'll see you on Saturday, etc)

Semi-formal style

We write semi-formal letters to people that we do not know very well. They are usually more polite than informal letters and are written in a neutral style. It is important, when writing this type of letter, to make sure that our writing is neither too formal nor too informal.

Formal style

We usually write formal letters to people we have not met. Characteristics of the formal style include:

* long forms (e.g. I am, you are, it is, we will, etc.)

* more sophisticated vocabulary (e.g. remarkable, very enjoyable, I would advise you to… etc.)

*Use of the passive, rather than the active voice (e.g. ‘something should be done’ instead of ‘we should do something’, etc.)

* Formal beginnings and endings (e.g. dear Sir/Madam, I look forward to hearing from you, yours faithfully, etc.)

Appearance and Character

The pretty mermaid looked up from the golden sand and the world fell in love with her. The film was Splash, and the mermaid was the famous actress, Daryl Hannah, who has also starred in such films as Roxanne and Blade Runner.

Daryl is tall and slender. She has got long blond hair, large blue eyes and stunning features. She looks fantastic in expensive clothes, but she prefers casual clothes which show off her natural beauty.

She is more than just another pretty face, however. She is a complicated person whose character has many sides. She is often in the public eye, but she is actually a very shy person who dislikes the crowdsand noise of Hollywood parties. Her shyness is a problem which she is trying to overcome with her friends' help. She is not the sort of person who expects help without giving anything back, however. Daryl is an extremely caring person, and she says that she forgets her own problems when she is helping others. She is also a romantic who believes in true love, so she wants to find someone very special before she starts a family.

Daryl's lifestyle is quite simple. When she is not working, her favourite activities are gardening, playing the piano and making pottery,all of which reveal the creative side of her character.

Daryl may prefer to sit in the shadows at parties, but when it comes to her beliefs she is not afraid to speak her mind. She has strong views on the environment.She believes that our modern lifestyle is destroying the environment. For this reason, she is currently looking fora place in the countryside where she can build an environmentally-friendly house. She says that she feels most relaxed when she is close to nature.

Underneath the success, shyness and simple lifestyle are Daryl's very strong views on life. As she says, "Find out what is important to you - and don't be afraid to live it!"

It is a pleasure to meet an actress who remains down-to-earth and sincere in a world where fame and success can often harm one’s character.
