Exercise 7. There are many branches of industry where an engineer can work. Answer the question as in the pattern.

 

Pattern. What would you do at the plant if you were a production engineer? (… to plan smooth flow of materials). – If I were a production engineer, I should plan smooth flow of materials.

a) a research engineer (to conceive ideas); b) a design engineer (to make drawings); c) a planning engineer (to order materials); d) a tool engineer (to design tools).

 

 

Exercise 8. Check your grammar.

 

State the functions of the verbs "should" and "would" and translate the sentences.

 

1. The engineer said that the operation of the dough mixer would be better understood if he used a diagram.

2. The quality of goods produced by the shop would be improved, if the equipment of the first line were modernized.

3. It would be difficult for him to charge the mixer by himself because usually two operators are required to do this job.

4. If the size and shape of the products to be transported are known, it would be possible to select the proper equipment for their transportation.

5. For the movement of goods from one point to another, conveyors should be used. 6. The chief engineer assumed that in a year the mill would double its production.

7. If we had any trouble with the equipment, the engineer would always help us to adjust it. 8. If the machine were adjusted, it would be tested today.

9. If the equipment were not out of order, we should finish our work in two days. 10. Should the pressure rise above the safety limit, open the valve.

 

 

Exercise 9. Answer the questions imaging the following situation.

 

1. I don't know how to operate this machine. What would you do? 2. We have broken our car. What would you do in our place?

3. First I studied at the pedagogical college, but I like engineering best of all. So I dropped my studies at the pedagogical college and went to the agricultural institute. What would you do in my place?

4. I don't know where the main shop of this plant is. Where could I get the answer? 5. You don't know how to translate this sentence. Who would you consult?
