Read and translate the text.

Compression

Forming is the process of changing the shape of a material without adding anything or taking anything away. Only melted or soft materials can be formed. Wire, sheet metal parts for cars and water pipes are all shaped by forming processes. Compression is involved in the process of forming as extrusion, drawing, stamping, and bending.

Squeezing a material using force or pressure results in compression. Heavy or thick materials may have to be heated first, until they are soft and bend easily. This is called hot forming. Some thinner materials can be compressed at room temperature. This is called cold forming. The two most commonly used compression processes are forging and rolling.

You may have seen examples of forging in movie westerns. It was the method used by black­smiths to form horseshoes. The blacksmith heated the metal until it was softened and then hammered it into shape.

In modern forging, dies are used to shape the metal. Dies are molds made of steel. The metal is placed between two dies and compressed until it is the shape of the die. Hammer heads and wrenches are made this way.

In rolling, the metal is squeezed between two rollers. Sometimes more than one set of rollers is used. As the metal is rolled, it gets thinner, longer, and wider. Sheet metal and steel beams are made by rolling.
