Isaac Newton

(1642-1727)

Isaac Newton is one of the greatest men in the history of science. He was born in the little village of Wool Thorpe, not far from the old university town of Cambridge, on December 25, 1642. His father was a poor farmer. At the age of twelve Isaac was sent to the small town of Grantham to the Grammar School.

At first he did not take any very serious interest in his lessons at school and was very often one of the worst pupils in his class. But one day he had to fight with one of his schoolmate and won the victory. But he was not satisfied with his physical victory. He decided to study better than this boy.He began to work hard at his lessons and soon became the best pupil in the class.

Newton gave a lot of tune to construct models.He made an excellent working model of a windmill which was not far from his school. Among other things that he made was a water-clock.

When Isaac was fourteen years old, his mother thought it was time for him to begin working on the farm as she wanted her son to become a farmer. But the boy did not like farming. When his mother realized it, Newton was sent back to school where he studied well and prepared for college.

At the age of eighteen Newton was sent to Cambridge University where he became one of the best students.

He gave much of his life to determining the laws which rule the Universe. He was one of the greatest minds of his time. He worked out the binomial theorem. But perhaps his main discovery was the law of gravity.

Isaac Newton formulated the law of gravity, discovered why the prism breaks up sunlight into colors, and invented the reflecting telescope. It was he who said that light is a combination of different rays of different colours, and that white light is a mixture of all these.

Isaac Newton has solved one of the great riddles of the Universe. In 1703 his countrymen elected Newton President of the Royal Society. On February 18, 1727 he attended his last meeting of the Royal Society. On March 20 1727 he died and was buried in Westminster Abbey. There is a monument to Newton in Trinity College at Cambridge with the inscription: Newton, who surpassed all men of Science.
