Contextual meaning of the definite article.

The definite article may have various realizations in Ukrainian in various situations.

1. as the demonstrative pronoun цей (ця, це, ці):

What his sister has seen in the man was beyond him. (J. London)

Що його сестра знайшла у цьому чоловікові, він не міг збагнути.

1. as the demonstrative pronouns такий (той, та, те, ті), той самий (саме той, та сама), такий самий:

The fellow behind us in the crowd was talking again.

Той самий хлопець із натовпу позад нас тепер озвався знов.

But surely Ruth did not understand it, he concluded. How could she, living the refined life she did?

Рут навряд чи розуміла цей твір. Та і як вона могла зрозуміти, живучи таким витонченим, як у неї, життям?

1. as the possessive pronouns її, їхні, свій (своя, своє, свої):

The room was situated over the laundry.

Його (залежно від контексту) кімната була(знаходилась) над пральнею.

“ Why don’t you eat? ” hedemanded, as Martin dipped dolefully into the cold, half cooked oatmeal mush.

“Чому ти не їси?” – запитав він, бачачи, як неохоче Мартін копирсає свою недоварену вівсяну кашу.

1. as the identifying pronouns весь, вся, все/цілий:

He looked up, and it seemed that the room was lifting…

Він підвів голову і йому здалося, що вся (залежно від контексту) кімната ходить ходором.

1. as the relative pronoun який (яка, яке, які):

She did not know the actual fire of love.

Вона не знала, яке то справжнє полум’я кохання.

1. as the indefinite pronouns якийсь (якась, якесь), певний:

For the moment the great gulf that separated them was bridged.

На якусь мить через велику безодню, що розділяла їх, був наведений міст.

1. as the identifying attributive pronouns сам, сам собою, інший/інша:

The labour meant nothing to him.

Сама собою праця/труд нічого не важила для нього.

…for of the women he had known – that was the only way he thought.

…бо про інших жінок, яких він знав, він інакше взагалі не думав.

1. as an adjective or (adjectivized) participle (according to the contextual meaning):

Martin Eden did not go out to hunt for a job in the morning.

Мартін Іден не пішов наступного ранку шукати роботи.

He gave her the money he had kept all the time.

Він віддав їй зароблені гроші, які він не витратив за цей час.

1. as a particle emphasizing the attributive pronoun, numeral or some other part of speech:

But the story was grand just the same, perfectly grand.

А так це оповідання – чудове, ну просто чудове.

The next afternoon I decided to go for a walk.

На другий же день я вирішив вийти на прогулянку.

Also, we should be aware of such notions as theme and rheme. Theme – presents the known information in the sentence. Rheme – presents the new information appearing in the sentence for the first time. The farther context can/may turn rheme into theme:

A cat is under the table. The cat is so black and terrible…
