Nowadays more and more people travel around the world, some travel on business, some just for travelling, but all of them have to stop at hotels.

There are millions of hotels all over the world, some of them are small and reasonably priced, some are very expensive, and of course there are very big hotels which are well – known all over the world.

And certainly every hotel has a restaurant where you can have three meals a day and where you can book something to bring to your room.

Seaside hotels have swimming pools and tennis courts.

Surely modern hotels make our travelling easy and comfortable.

The world is full of wonderful things. You see the blue sky and the grey rain, the black night and the shiny stars, trees and mountains, seas and sunshine. These things are the world, and they are all around you.

It's interesting to know why we need the Sun, why the moon is bright, what animals live on the Earth.

The world we live on is a big round ball. It's turning all the time but we can't feel it.

The Sun shines on the Earth, the rain falls on it.

Different plants grow on the Earth, different animals live on it. The forests are full of berries and mushrooms.

There is water around the land. It's called the World Ocean. There is life in the Ocean too. Different sea animals and fishes live in the ocean.

Nature gives us everything we need for our life. People grow food on the ground. Animals give us meat and milk. We must take good care of nature.

Keep your eyes and ears open and you’ll see a lot of interesting things around you.

Car Production Rises

Output of cars in the UK continues to rise steadily, with an increase of 5.4 per cent exceeding last month figures.

The latest figures mean that production in the first two months of this year, at 274,191, is running more than 9 per cent above the equivalent period of 1997.

Output for export continued to climb, with a 6.5 per cent rise to 74,424 as a result of higher sales outside Britain by BMWs Rover offshoot and by the three Japanese carmakers in the UK.

The policy by Ford and General Motors of exporting UK-built cars also helped.

Buying foodstuffs

Mother: Ann, will you please, do the shopping today? I'm very busy.

Ann: Of course, I shall. What am I to buy?

Mother: We are going to have a festive dinner tomorrow. Your Aunt Liza and uncle Roger promised to come and see us.

Ann: What are you going to cook? Shall we have anything special?

Mother: For the first course I want to make clear soup. Will you buy some beef, please, but mind, it shouldn't be very fat.

Ann: Shall I buy anything else at the butcher's?

Mother: If they have lean mutton, buy 2 kilos, please, I'll make mutton chops for the second course. I'm afraid we've run out of potatoes and tomatoes. Drop in at the greengrocer's and get 2 kilos of potatoes and one of tomatoes.

Ann: Is that all? Beef, 2 kilos of mutton, 2 kilos of potatoes and 1 kilo of tomatoes.

Mother: Oh, dear, you won't be able to carry all that, I'll ask Mike to help you. Mike, will you please go with Ann and help her with the shopping?

Mike: Certainly, if she buys me an ice cream.

Mother: That reminds me. Will you look in at the cake shop and buy a chocolate cake? Aunt Liza is very fond of it. That seems to be all. Here is the money.

Ann: Mike, take the shopping bag and off we go.

You should know that the smell of flowers in the gardens and in the parks is very strong before it rains. Flowers have much sweet nectar before rain and the nectar is good food for insects. So if you see insects flying over flowers in large numbers you should know that it may rain soon. Birds and animals also help to forecast weather. Birds fly lower than usual before it rains. If you happen to see a bird hiding its head under its wing, it means that soon it will become colder.

NHOC in West Coast Refinery Shock

The National Hermosa Oil Corporation (NHOC) officially announced yesterday that it intends to construct a $1 billion oil refinery on the west coast of the island. The project is expected to take five years to complete, with 2,000 workers involved in its construction. The refinery when finished will employ 500 staff, easing the employment situation on the west coast, where tourism is at present the only industry.

Local residents are less optimistic. The head of the environmental group Green Action, Mr. Charles Chang, says that the prospect of large oil tankers unloading their cargo at the port is “alarming”. “We don't believe what NHOC and the Ministry of the Environment are telling us. We've already seen the damage that oil pollution can do in other parts of the world. And the idea of building the refinery in a national park is ridiculous. What is the point of national parks if they can build oil refineries in them?”

At school and colleges physically training is a compulsory subject. Among the most popular in our country we can name soccer, volleyball, figure – skating, cross-country skiing, swimming. In the recent years yachting – windsurfing and tennis have also gained many fans and became rather popular. My favorite sport is basketball. Basketball is a wonderful sport. It’s a good exercise too. It makes us strong and healthy. To become a good sportsman you must train a lot. If you want to be good at something you have to work hard. Practice makes perfect.

For many people shopping has become a hobby. They meet up with their friends, try on the clothes, have a burger for lunch. In short, they enjoy hanging around in positive feeling, exciting environments in which they feel at home. This means that shop owners need to attract shoppers and to induce them to buy their product at a price which leaves some profit. If shops play music and have lights like a club, shoppers will be also tempted into the shop. When we are going shopping there are a lot of shops at our disposal. We can distinguish between supermarkets, department stores and specialty shops.

Inflation

Inflation is generally defined as a persistent rise in the general price level with no corresponding rise in output, which leads to a corresponding fall in the purchasing power of money.

In this section we shall look briefly at the problems that inflation causes for business and consider whether there are any potential benefits for an enterprise from an inflationary period.

Inflation varies considerably in its extent and severity. Hence, the consequences for the business community differ according to circumstances. Mild inflation of a few per cent each year may pose few difficulties for business. However, hyperinflation, which entails enormously high rates of inflation, can create almost insurmountable problems for the government, business, consumers and workers. In post -war Hungary, the cost of living was published each day anil workers were paid daily so as to avoid the value of their earnings falling. Businesses would have experienced great difficulty in costing and pricing their production while the incentive for people to save would have been removed.

Economists argue al length about the causes of and "cures" for inflation. They would, however, recognize that two general types of inflation exist: demand-pull inflation; cost-push inflation.

For the 2-nd course Russians eat different kinds of salad (meat salad, fish salad, vegetable salad), fried, boiled or stewed meat or fish. At times we cook a roast chicken, especially on holidays.

For the 3-d course (for dessert) we have a glass of juice, a piece of a cake or a pie (cookies) if we aren't on a diet. A lot of people eat ice-cream, fruit and berries for dessert (pineapples, tangerines, apricots, cherries, mangoes; strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and etc.). In summer everybody adores to have a piece of melon or a water-melon).

In the evening we have supper. Some people prefer mashed potatoes with pickled or fresh vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, onions (leek). Others eat stewed cabbage with a beefsteak or fried liver or kidneys. Russians also like stuffed peppers, tomatoes, squashes, potatoes. A special Russian dish is "'pyelmeni", a kind of ravioli - small cases of pasta containing chopped meat.

After that we have a glass of milk or stewed fruit with biscuits, crackers, or sweets (candies). But if you are thirsty you drink a coke, lemonade, some beer or even champagne.

Summer is wonderful! There are many long sunny days and there is no school! There are new friends and many interesting things to see and to do.

Some children spend their holidays at the seaside, some in the mountains and some in the country.

Isn't it nice to spend some weeks out of a noisy town?

Isn't it to walk in the green fields? To watch the clouds? To sit down by a river or a lake on soft green grass? To climb the high hills? To swim and to fish? To play games outdoors all the time. I think I was the happiest of all because I was at a wonderful children's camp. Children from different towns gather here every year.

In the morning we swam and bathed in the beautiful sea and played games on the yellow sand. In the evening we made a camp-fire, sat around it and sang songs. We all became good friends.

The day to leave came too soon. We had a very good time at camp with our new friends. Children find a lot of things to enjoy, and the summer months go so quickly. Then autumn comes and school begins.

A Visit to the Houses of Parliament

The students arrived at Westminster at half past three and went to the entrance in the Victoria Tower. Soon the guide came and the tour began.

The guide took the students first to the House of Lords. They saw the Throne on which the Queen sits when she opens Parliament and the Woolsack (a real sack of wool) on which the Lord Chancellor sits. The Lord Chancellor sits on a woolsack because years ago wool was the most important thing England produced. There are almost 800 peers in the House of Lords but only about half take an active interest in the affairs of the state.

December, January and February are the winter months. In winter the days are short and the nights are long. English people try to spend more time indoors because out of doors it's cold. In December the sun rises about eight a.m. and gets about four o'clock p.m. Eight hours of daylight! It's so little.

Spring brings with it new life. The sky is blue. It's warm, the days become longer. The summer months are June, July and August. The weather in Great Britain is usually warm in summer. It is sometimes hot, but it is not often very hot. When the temperature is over eighty degrees Fahrenheit (80 F) English people say that it is hot. When the temperature is about seventy degrees Fahrenheit (70 F), they say that it is warm. In the south of Europe the summer is usually very hot. It is always hot in the South of Spain and North Africa.

There are books and writers that everybody knows. “Mary Poppins” by Pamela Travers, “Winnie-the-Pooh” by Alan Milne, and of course “The adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain.

My favorite book is “Tom Sawyer”. Tom Sawyer was a boy with wild imagination. He and his friends liked to play games, dreamt of different adventures. Tom was sometimes naughty and never quiet. But he was often noble and always bright and full of ideas. I also enjoy books about animals. Have you ever heard of Bambi? He is a baby deer who is famous all over the world. “Bambi” is a book by an Austrian writer Felix Salthen. Its author is a poet who feels nature deeply and loves animals.

Many sports, such as hockey, or baseball and American football nowadays, came to our country from abroad. There are many stadiums and other sports facilities in our country. A lot of national and international matches and competitions take place there. Lenin Stadium in Moscow is the biggest one in Europe. Some of the sport complexes were built for the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980. Russian athletes participate in most of the sports events in the world and usually show very good results. Some of them are invited to foreign clubs to play for them or to train sportsmen there.
