Influenza

Good morning! Let me introduce myself. My name is Igor Sofronov. I’m a 4th-year student of MIPT. The subject of my presentation is virus of influenza. The presentation takes 7 minutes. I’ve chosen this topic because I am very interested in virology because it’s very important for society to treat viruses. I learn it at my department. And I would like to share this information with you. I have divided my presentation into 3 parts. Firstly, I will narrate you about symptoms of influenza. Then I’m going to tell about the mechanism of the virus action. And finally I’ll report about treatments. I’ll be glad to answer all your questions at the end of my presentation. Firstly, I would like to tell what influenza is. It’s a strong disease, which doesn’t let us feel well and work hard.

So, let me start my presentation with my 1st part about the symptoms.

There are a lot of systems in a human body which suffer from influenza. For example, CNS suffers, the patient has a headache, his joints ache, he coughs. There is a sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and other symptoms.

Let me continue my presentation with the 2nd part. Influenza spreads between people by the airborne route. It’s very simple to get ill in a crowd.

For understanding the mechanism of action of influenza we have to know the structure of virus. There is a double-layer envelope with trans-membrane proteins: neuraminidases and hemagglutinins. In the center of the virus there are RNAs which have information about influenza.

In this picture there are living cell and virus. It goes to the membrane of a living cell by its hemagglutinins. Then RNAs go to the nuclear of a living cell. After that in the result of transcription of a cell there are a lot of viruses in the cell. The cell dies and viruses go outside. Neuraminidases cut off sialic acid on the cell and viruses spread. That’s all what I would like to tell you about the mechanism of the influenza action.

Let’s move on the main part of my presentation and speak about the treatments of influenza. It’s very important to treat this disease.

There are 3 main ways: inhibition of NA, inhibition of DNA-polymerases, inhibition of binding to the membrane.

On this bar-chart there is some information on investments to drug discovery for different ways of inhibition for 2004, 2009 and 2014. Looking at the chart in more detail it clearly seen that inhibition of NA is the best way nowadays because a lot of money is invested into this way.

In the end of my presentation I would like to show you picture where you can see an active site with sialic acid and best drug – oseltamivir.

Let’s summarize. I told you about inhibition of NA. Best drugs for whis way are oseltamivir, zanamivir and laninamivir.

In conclusion, I would like to tell thatit’s very simple to get virus and everybody should be careful.

That’s all. Thank you for your attention! If you have any questions I would be glad to answer them.
