Foreign Television Stations in China
Much of southern China—particularly Guangdong and Fujian Provinces—picks up television channels from Hong Kong and Taiwan without cable or satellite dishes. It is estimated that two thirds of the households with televisions in the Guangdong Province receive regular programming from Hong Kong. Many Chinese tune into satellite broadcasts of Star Television (Satellite Television Asia Region) from Hong Kong. Conversely people in Hong Kong and Taiwan cab tune into broadcasts of mainland shows.
As of the early 2000s, people in China could pick foreign television channels such the BBC Брита́нская широковеща́тельная корпора́ция, ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) спортивный телевизионный канал, and the Phoenix Chinese Channel. Star TV, owned by Murdoch-owned News Corp., and MTV, owned by Viacom, are broadcast to selected Chinese audiences. Others like CNN The Cable News Network and BBC World BBC World News — международный круглосуточный новостной телеканал BBC. are broadcast into hotels and residential compounds used foreigners.
CETV Chinese Entertainment Television, Star TV and Phoenix have permission to operate 24-hour channels in the southern province of Guangdong. CETV is owned by AOL Time Warner. It broadcasts on cable systems in the Pearl River Чжуцзян Delta area around Guangzhou.

One of the biggest players in bringing foreign media to China is the Shanghai Media Group. It has deals with Viacom to bring MTV and Nickelodeon programing to China as well as deals with VNU, CNBC Consumer News and Business Channel, Universal Music Group, Sony, Discover Communications and the National Basketball Association to bring a host of other shows. Shanghai Media is headed by Li Ryugand. Formed in 2001, SMG is the result of a merger between the People’s Radio Station of Shanghai, East Radio Shanghai, Shanghai Television Station, and Oriental Television Station.
SMG’s core business is television broadcasting and related media entertainment services including sports, showbiz, performance arts, science and technology, and finance. The television broadcasting media consist of 11 analogue TV channels, 90 digital paid cable TV channels, a full broadcasting Internet TV service, along with 10 analogue and 19 digital radio services.
The Chinese television company TCL acquired a controlling interesting in its French rival Thomson.
