By the end of the XVI century Ruzhany (Grodno Region. Pruzhany District) became the property of the Sapegas, who laid here the foundation of their residence — a double-storey cross-shaped palace. Its inner lay-out consisted of a suite of rooms. The premises on the ground floor had vaulted ceilings, the first floor had joist ceilings. Under the palace there were vaulted basements. In 1644 it was visited by the Polish King Vladislav IV with his suite. The palace was heavily damaged by the confederates' troops in 1698 and during the Northern war of 1700-1721. In 1784-1786 architect Y.S Becker reconstructed it into a magnificent palace complex, where the elements of the late baroque andclassicism merged together. In the western wing of the palace there was a picture-gallery, in the eastern wing - a riding-hall and a theater. The palate was considered to be one the greatest in Belarus and Lithuania. In 1784 the Ruzhany palace was visited by the last King of Rzechpospolita Stanislav August Ponyatovsky. After the division of Rzechpospolita (1795) the palate started to decline. From 1795 a cloth-mill and a weaving mill were set up in the palace complex. In 1914 the main block and one of the sideblocks were burnt down as a result of a fire. The palace was partially restored in 1930. The Sapegas" legacy was finally ruined in 1944.
