Part 1

THE PRESENT PERFECT AND THE SIMPLE PAST

1. Put the verbs in brackets into the present perfect or the simple past tense. (In some sentences the present perfect continuous is also possible)

1. He (live) in London for two years and then (go) to Edinburgh.

2. I (not see) him for three years. I wonder where he is.

3. He (not smoke) for two weeks. He is trying to give it up.

4. When he (arrive)? – He (arrive) at 2.00

5. I can’t go out because I (not finish) my work.

6. The clock is slow. – It isn’t slow, it (stop).

7. Here are your shoes; I just (clean) them.

8. He just (go) out.

9. He (go) out ten minutes ago.

10. (have) breakfast yet? – Yes, I (have) it at 8.00.

11. The play just (begin). You are a little late.

12. The newspaper (come)? – Yes, Ann is reading it.

13. He (break) his leg in a skiing accident last year.

14. Mr. Pound is the bank manager. He (be) here for five years.

15. Mr. Count (work) as a cashier for twenty-five years. Then he (retire) and (go) to live in the country.

16. You (be) here before? – Yes, I (spend) my holidays here last year. – You (have) a good time? – No, It never (stop) raining.

THE PRESENT PERFECT AND THE PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Put the verbs in brackets into the present perfect or the present perfect continuous tense. (In some cases either could be used.)

1. We (walk) ten kilometers.

2. We (walk) for three hours.

3. You (walk) too fast. That’s why you are tired.

4. I (make) sausage rolls for the party all the morning. – How many you (make) – I (make) 200.

5. That boy (eat) seven ice-creams.

6. He (not stop) eating since he arrived.

7. The driver (drink). I think someone else ought to drive.

8. What you (do) all day? – We (pick) apples. - How many you (pick)? – We (pick) ten basketfuls.

9. The students (work) very well this term.

10. I (polish) this table all the morning and she isn’t satisfied with it yet.

11. He (teach) in this school for five years now.

12. Why you (be) so long in the garage? – The tyres were flat; I (pump) them up. - I (pump) up three tyres. Would you like to do the fourth?

FOR AND SINCE

Fill the spaces in the following sentences by using for or since

1. We’ve been fishing … two hours.

2. I’ve been working in this office … a month.

3. They’ve been living in France … 1970.

4. He has been in prison … a year.

5. I’ve known that … a long time.

6. That man has been standing there … six o’clock.

7. She has driven the same car … 1975.
