HR M: You sent a CV for a manager vacancy. Have you worked as a manager before?

JS: Yes, I had some experience. I worked for four months with Brown and Co.

HR M: What are your best personal and professional qualities relevant to the job?

JS: I’m reliable, well-organized and initiative. PC user. Fluent in German.

HR M: How do you work in a team? Are you a team player?

JS: I enjoy working with people. In my last position I worked with five other people and we shared the responsibilities well.

HR M: What motivates you in terms of work?

JS: I would like to gain some experience and then go on to do an MBA.

HR M: What do you consider your weakness is?
JS: I am too self-critical and demanding and may be quite stubborn at times.

HR M: Yes, well, thank you. I see, now…Can you start on Monday at 9 sharp?

JS: Thank you!

HR M: So, you worked for an insurance company. What were your duties there?

JS: At first I assisted the vice president of corporate sales. I did most of his legwork for him and took care of all the administrative duties.

HR M: I see you were promoted twice.

JS: Yes, currently I’m a regional sales representative.

HR M: May I ask why you want to leave your present employer after all this time?

JS: The position you advertize offers me the opportunity to move into a managerial position. I believe this is the right step at this point of my career.

HR M: We will discuss your application with my colleagues and call you next week.

JS: Thank you.

HR M: Hello. How are you doing today? Did you have any trouble finding the office?

JS: Hello. I'm fine, thank you, and I had no trouble at all getting here.

HR M: Great. Well let's get started. Tell me a little about your educational background.

JS: So, I graduated from UCLA in 2008, with a Bachelors degree in journalism. After that I enrolled in NYU's master's program for journalism, graduating in 2011.

HR M: I see. Now, how about your work experience?

JS: After I left NYU, I worked for a year at the Daily Newspaper. From there I moved to San Francisco and was employed by the Bay Area Chronicle, covering local and state politics.

HR M: What was the biggest story you covered while you were there.

JS: I covered several that I thought were important, but I would have to say the investigative piece I did on the cover-up of the governor's staff involvement in the embezzlement of education funds was the biggest.

HR M: What have you been doing since you left?

JS: Mainly taking care of our baby. But now I'm ready to go back to work.

HR M: What brought you to Denver?

JS: My husband’s company transferred him here last month.

HR M: Why did you apply here? Denver has three daily newspapers to choose from.

JS: I felt that this paper is better suited for my conservative thinking, my unique writing style, and my diverse areas of interest when covering political news.

HR M: Thank you. We'll make a selection in a couple of days and will give you a call.

HR M: Hello, Miss Jones, thank you for coming, please seat down.

JS: Oh, thank you.

HR M: Firstly, where did you see the advert for this position?

JS: I saw it on the internet.

HR M: Have you brought your CV with you?

JS: Yes, here you are.

HR M: Thank you. Could you tell a bit about your qualifications?

JS: Of course, I hold a secretarial in business diploma. Fluent in French.

HR M: Fine. Could you tell me about any relevant experience you have?

JS: Previously I worked at a bank as a personal secretary to the director.

HR M: Would you mind telling me why you left?

JS: Well, the salary was fairly good but there were no promotion prospects, so I decided to resign and look for something more challenging.

HR M: Now, I see. Is there anything you’d like to know about us?

JS: Yes, I have a few questions. What are the working hours at your corp.?

HR M: From 9 am to 5 pm with an hour for lunch. But we’re quite flexible.

JS: Oh, that sounds fine. And what salary could I expect?

HR M: Well, starting salary is 700 dollars a month before tax. After 6 months the salary increases by 10 %.

JS: That’s not bad. When could I expect to hear from you?

HR M: We have a few more people to see. I hope to contact you by Friday.

HR M: Tell me about yourself.

JS: I am a software engineer with 4 years of experience in Sales Force domain with expertise in Customer Relationship Management process. Leaving aside that, I am a jovial person who loves to hitch-hike and play football whenever time permits.

HR M: Can you briefly explain what role you played in Customer Relationship Management process for Sales Force?

JS: Yes, sure. I was a team lead while designing the Customer Relationship Management software for Sales Force. The project was regarding an international retail chain. With a team of 15 members I was able to successfully pin –point and utilize the factors affecting the footfall at the store and thus, helped the client achieve a growth of 30% in sales.

HR M: Great! So, how do you think you fit in our organization?

JS: I wish to make a career in IT industry and keeping in mind my long term goals, I believe that associating with this organization will be the most prudent step. In here, I would surely be able to further utilize my skills in the most effective manner and also, obtain a chance of acquiring newer skills.

HR M: So, you’re interested in joining our company?

JS: Yes, that’s right.

HR M: What appeals to you about working for a company like ours?

JS: Well, from what I have researched I think working with your company would be very challenging and would also give me the opportunity to learn and interact with experts in my field.

HR M: What kind of asset do you feel you would be to the company?

JS: Well, apart from the qualifications and experience that I have, I also feel that I am a highly motivated person who is capable of working in a team or alone.

HR M: So, can you tell me what made you reply to our advertisement?

JS: Well, I was looking for a part-time job to help me through college.

HR M: Do you know exactly what you would be doing as a shop assistant?

JS: Well, I would be helping customers and keeping a check on the supplies.

HR M: That about covers it. Have you any previous work experience?

JS: Yes. I worked part-time at a take-away in the summer holidays.

HR M: Now, do you have any questions you'd like to ask me about the position?

JS: Yes. Could you tell me what hours I'd have to work?

HR M: We open at 9.00, but you’re expected to arrive at 2.00 and we close at 6.00 pm.

JS: Thank you. When will I know the results of the interview?

HR M: We'll be making our decision next Friday, we'll give you a call.

HR M: According to your CV you work for a real estate company.

JS: Yes, that’s right, I’ve been there for three years.

HR M: So why do you want to leave now?

JS: Well, I do like my job, but I really want to do something a bit different from just secretarial work. I feel this vacancy will offer me that.

HR M: Oh yes, definitely. But there would also be administrative duties, typing reports, some correspondence and e-mails. Is that what you expect?

JS: That sounds okay. And how about training?

HR M: We offer quite a few in-company programs and we also send people to outside training.

JS: I’m really interested in this job and I’ll be waiting for your decision.

HR Manager: Good afternoon, Mr. Brooks. Have a seat, please.

Job Seeker: Good afternoon.

HR M: I received your resume a few weeks ago and I must say I was impressed.

JS: Thank you.

HR M: As you know we are a small but fast growing financial company, mostly trading stocks and bonds. Why are you interested in working for us?

JS: I know that your company has an excellent reputation. Besides, I have always wanted to work with a smaller company.

HR M: Tell me, please, a little bit about your current occupation?

JS: I'm a broker at a large international company at the moment. I mostly deal with clients and I handle all aspects of their accounts.

HR M: I see. Could you also tell me about your previous job experience?

JS: Yes, of course. I have worked for two full years at my current position. Before that, I participated at an internship program at the same company.

HR M: How long did the internship last?

JS: Almost for one year.

HR M: So, you have a three-year job experience, is that right?

JS: Absolutely. However, I would like to continue my career in this field.

HR M: Could you also say a few words about your main education?

JS: Yes, with pleasure. I graduated from the University of Kent and I have a degree in Accountancy and Finance.

HR M: Do you have any additional certificates?

JS: Yes, I do. After graduation I have also attended workshops for experienced specialists. I've gained lots of new financial theory and practice there, as well as a certificate of course completion.

HR M: That's good to know, Mr. Brooks. I would like to ask you one more question about your interest in our company. Why do you think that you are the right candidate for the position of head broker?

JS: I think that I have enough experience in the stock market to handle this job. Also, I quite like my current duties and don't mind expanding the range of my responsibilities in this field.

HR M: Well, you might just be the right person we've been looking for. Do you have any questions?

JS: Yes, I have one question. If I were hired, how many accounts would I be handling?

HR M: You'd be handling about a third of our clients, as you'd be working with two other head brokers. Is there anything else you'd like to ask?

JS: No, that's it. Thank you.

HR M: Ok, then. We will send our employment contract for your review this week, Mr. Brooks. And we hope to see you soon among our staff.

HR Manager: Tell me about yourself.

Job Seeker: I hold an engineering degree in software development from New Delhi University. I have been living in the US since I took a job as software engineer with Data Maintenance, Inc in 2009. I was responsible for creating and maintaining databases for 300 companies in various industries. I contacted clients, set up database systems for trial versions, fixed the system bugs, modified the interface to the specifications of user characteristics.

HR Manager: Why did you leave this position?

Job Seeker: Now that this position has been eliminated and I was offered another position in the same field but in Phoenix, Arizona. I am not ready to relocate so am looking for a new position.

HR Manager: What are your goals for your career?

Job Seeker: I want to secure a software engineering position with a company that concentrates on wholesale digital data systems development. Ideally, I’d like to work for a young company, such as yours, so I can get in on the ground floor and take advantage of all the opportunities a growing firm has to offer.

HR Manager: What are your weaknesses?

Job Seeker: I am a perfectionist, and this trait in some industries may not be a good fit. But, for a software engineering position I believe it will help me excel.

HR Manager: What is your approach to problem solving?

Job Seeker: I will first identify the problem; second, find out the resources I need to solve it if I have any and then how much time I would need to solve the problem. Depending on the nature of the problem, I will either solve the problem or report it to my supervisor immediately for additional resources.

HR Manager: How would you increase sale on a new database software the consumer showed no interest in?

Job Seeker: I would try to increase product awareness by enacting some marketing strategies to employ advertising, direct mail or media campaigns.

HR Manager: Why do you want to work here?

Job Seeker: I want to be a part of a global company like yours, who invest in the future. I'm impressed with your investments in research and development of eco-friendly industrial processes.

HR Manager: Tell me about the worst boss you ever had.

Job Seeker: While none of my past bosses were awful, there are some who taught me more than others did.
