Some comments on the accommodation
Here are some words and expressions connected with various ways in which English people spend their holidays. Hotel, boarding house, guest house. These words are often used with the verb “to stay”, e.g. We stayed at a hotel, boarding house, guest house. Some people still use ‘an’ with ‘hotel’ /an hotel/, but this now sounds old-fashioned or pedantic.
A boarding house and a guest house are basically the same, that is a private house which provides board (either full-board or half-board) and lodging for a relatively small number of people. Board means food, meals, and lodging – a place to live. They are generally less formal than a hotel, and cheaper. Hornby defines a guest house as ‘a superior boarding house’. Boarding houses and guest houses often take people only for one or more complete weeks, from Saturday to Saturday, at least at a holiday season.
Bed and Breakfast (B & B). There are some private houses which are not proper boarding houses, but which just provide bed and breakfast. They are intended mainly for people who are travelling round from one place to another, touring in a car, but they will take people for any number of nights. There is no special term for such houses, some people call the bed-and-breakfast places. e.g. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast place for a couple of nights. The houses usually have a sign saying BED AND BREAKFAST outside.
