Working conditions and welfare are very important for people as they usually spend a great part of their life at work. These include salary and other payments, working hours, promotion, holidays, sick and maternity leaves, pension schemes, health services, housing, and other facilities. Welfare can be provided by governments, non-government organizations and companies.

‘Working hours’ refers not only to the hours the employee actually works but also to the time of the day and night when the hours are worked. Many people work fixed day; the others work shifts or flexi time. Hours worked outside a period from 8 am to 5 pm are called ‘unsocial hours’ and are often paid by companies at a higher rate as overtime. The most comfortable for people is flexi time because it allows employees to vary their hours of work within limits. They will have to work a certain number of hours per week but can start and finish work at their convenience.

Mary Smith is a college graduate and she says about her future job:

‘I want to find a proper job in a company which needs a specialist in my field. If I work part-time I want the same status as a full timer. I might have piece work and if I am a sales person I want to get a commission for what I sell. I think I will not earn much money at first. However, I hope to get promotion.
I’ll take training courses. I prefer in-house (internal) training. But I don’t mind external training in different forms – day-release or moth-release. I especially like correspondence courses as they don’t need time off work. I hope to be successful at the job interview and to get the job I like. At first, I’ll be a trainee and work on probation. Then I’ll be in junior staff. Soon, as I get some experience and if I work hard, I hope that my employer will give me several pay rises. I would like to receive a bonus as well as perks for working hard and I will not mind extra bonus for Christmas. I want to have a bank account, medical insurance and paid sick leave, long holidays and other benefits, for example, sports and canteen facilities. When I have a baby I will take a maternity leave. I hope the company has trained nurses in the crêche to look after my child when I am at work. I am young but I have to think about the time when I will not be able to work. I hope the company has a pension scheme and I will receive a generous pension when I retire. I am self-motivated and ambitious and I believe I will get work satisfaction and good salary.’
