Rule

We use tag questions to make sure that something is or is not true

Structure

the Battery Rule Tag questions are like batteries. If the sentence is positive, then the tag (хвостик) is negative, and if the sentence is negative, the tag is positive.   Здесь мы используем правило батарейки: у нее два полюса (+ и -). Она не будет работать, если полюсы одинаковые. Так же и с Tag Questions: если основное предложение положительное, то tag будет отрицательный, и наоборот.  

Positive statement + Snow is white,	Negative Tag - isn’t it?
Negative statement - You don’t smoke,	Positive Tag + do you?

Tag question = AV + pronoun [вспомогат.глагол + местоимение]

She likes ice-cream, doesn’t she?

She doesn’t like ice-cream, does she?

NB!    

1. We only use tag questions after a positive or a negative sentence. We can’t use tags after a question. Мы используемtag только с утвердительным или отрицательным предложениями, но мы НЕ можем использовать их с вопросами. +: John goes to college, doesn’t he? J -: John doesn’t have a pitbull, does he? J ?: Does John have a pitbull, doesn’t he? L   2. We use a short form of AV in a tag question: В хвостике используется только сокращенная форма вспомогательного глагола! She is nice, isn’t she? J She is nice, is not she? L

Special Features

Some tag questions have special forms: У некоторых tag question есть специальные формы. 1. I am à aren’t I (but I’m not à am I) I’m right, aren’t I? (But I’m not fat, am I?) 2. never... + positive tag He never calls me, does he?
