English Public Speaking Competition

organized

by

LCC International University

THE GOAL

LCC International University is an American type university in Klaipeda, Lithuania where the teaching language is English. Being a truly international university where 60% of all students are international students coming from 27 different countries and 70% of professors are English speakers from the USA and Canada, LCC International University wants to promote the use of English as a language for further studies as well as reward students who excell in their studies.

LCC International University has partnered with different schools in Ukraine since 2004 and Ukrainian students continue coming for their studies to Lithuania, later graduate and return to their home countries, and we believe this University can continue being a great educational establishment for many future students. In our gratitude and friendship with the schools and the Educational department, we present this competition as a way for students to be motivated to learn English well as this international language provides many opportunities for the future.

And as a final motivation we present the prize: the winner of the competition will be awarded a free trip to LCC International University in April where he/she will participate in the final round of the competition. Winners for similar competitions from Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine will all meet at LCC in Klaipeda and the final winner will be selected. The winner will win a free semester at LCC International University. There will be many other prizes for three best speakers, so that every student would feel motivated and encouraged by participating.

Dates

March 9 – competition in Zaporozhye

March 11 – competition in Cherkassy

March 13 – competition in Zhytomyr

April 16-17– competition finale in Klaipeda

THE THEME

The theme for the competition is Differences and Diversity. The student can choose to interpret the theme in any way that they choose and have their own topic for their speech.

PARTICIPATION

Each school can delegate one participant and register him/her by filling out the form (attached on page 3 of this document). We strongly encourage schools to organize a public speaking competition in their schools in order to choose the best speaker. Participants must be students of 10th-11th class. Registration deadline is February 23, 2014 with the competition to be held at the beginning of March in Ukraine.

THE SPEECH

Participants will have to deliver a speech, the title and content of which will have to be connected with the theme for the competition in one or another way. Participants may interpret the theme in any way they wish, but may not use the theme as the title of their speech.. Participants may be as creative as they can in interpretation of the theme because the judges will be looking for memorable speeches. Public speaking is more than just an act of speaking: it reveals personality, attitudes, general intelligence of the speaker, ability to concentrate, address the public, control one’s body and voice, and sustain positive atmosphere in the audience. The speech should not be longer than 5 minutes.

THE PROCESS

First round. Speakers will speak in a random order, which will be determined by choosing a lot number. Speakers will deliver their 5 minute prepared speech which is connected with the theme for the competition. Speakers may not use any notes, props or visual aid. A timekeeper will give a signal at 4:30 minutes (to indicate that 30 seconds remain), at 5:00 minutes (to indicate that the participant’s time is up), and at 5:30 minutes (at which point the participant must conclude their speech immediately). The judges may ask questions at the end of the speech.

Finals of the city competition. Judges will determine 3 finalists. Finalists will speak on the same theme and argument that they presented in the first round. The finals speeches will be followed by a 3-4 minute question period. Questions may come from members of the audience or members of the judges‘ panel and participants should respond to each question individually.

The prize. The winner of the competition will be awarded with a free trip to Lithuania to participate in the 1st International Public Speaking Competition* to compete with national winners from Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine on April 16-17. The trip will also include a study tour to LCC International University, where participants will be able to visit classes and events hosted by the university.

1st prize winner of the International Competition will receive a free semester of studies at LCC,

2nd prize winner – free participation in LCC’s Summer Language Institute in Klaipeda (July 13-31).

* Costs

LCC International University will cover the roundtrip costs to Klaipeda, Lithuania. LCC will also provide free housing and cover most meals during the participant‘s stay at LCC. The participant may come to Lithuania along with their parent(s) or teacher, however, the University will not be covering their travel costs.

Trip arrangements

Participants coming from Ukraine will be accompanied by LCC’s representative in Ukraine Lidiya Didkivska, who will be assisting their travel and accommodating their stay in Lithuania.

Passports and visas

We encourage participants to develop their international passports beforehand in order to speed the visa process.
