  1. Wonders of the modern world. In the 2nd century BC a list of the most impressive and beautiful man-made objects in the world was made. Since then they have been called The Seven Wonders of the World. Speak on them. What do you think are some of the greatest wonders of the modern world?

 

  1. Choosing a career is a very important thing in everybody’s life. What points should be considered? What did you personally think when you were making a choice?

 

3. Talking about workplaces, rules and regulations. Workplaces are important for everybody. Some jobs are stressful because of circumstances. Are there any rules and regulations that may influence our attitude to work we do? What are the ideal working conditions?

 

4. Teaching as a career. Some young people consider teaching as a career. What is so special about this profession? Is it in your line? What challenges are young teachers facing in this career? Are there any advantages or disadvantages?

 

5. Interpretation as a career. Some young people consider interpretation or translation as a career. What is so special about this profession? Is it in your line? What difficulties await a future interpreter or a translator? What advantages and disadvantages are there in this profession?

6. The modern servant: pros and cons. Being a nanny, a cook, a gardener used to be regarded as being a servant. Has anything changed since then? Speak on these professions and the traits of character they require.

 

  1. Smoking. There are a lot of risky things in our life. Do you think smoking is one of them? Have attitudes to smoking changed in the world over the past few years? Do you think smoking should be banned? Why is it that nicotine is legal in all countries, while other drugs are illegal?
  2. Coping with a stress..We live in a modern society where to be stressed is an everyday reality. How to avoid stress and remain a relaxed person? Do you believe that such books as “The little book of calm” can help or you should try yourself? Imagine that you have been asked to contribute a new piece of advice to this book. What will it be?
  3. A visit to the doctor. People sometimes fall ill with different diseases. Speak of your last visit to the doctor. Describe the symptoms you had and the way you were treated. Give some advice on how to remain healthy and not to be taken ill.

10. London. London is an ancient city. It dominates British life. Tell about its history. What sights do you think one ought to do in London?

  1. The British Parliament is the main lawmaking body in Britain. Tell about its history, its structure, its location and function.
  2. Red Square and Trafalgar Square.. Imagine that you were asked to show the tourists the most beautiful squares in the world. Tell them about the main places of interest and the history of the two capital cities.
  3. Holidaymaking. The world around us suggests a lot of magnificent places to be visited and seen. Make up your own itinerary, consisting of four or five sights worth visiting. Explain your choice.
  4. Food in Culture Context. ”If the English can survive their food they can survive anything”. What do you think of this phrase? Explain it please. Do you agree that food is as much a part of a country’s culture as its landscape, language and literature? Which are your favourite places to eat in our country? Why?

15. National meals and eating habits. There is a quotation: “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are”. Comment on it. What are typical dishes of Italy, France, England, the USA? What do you think influenced British cooking?

 

16.Tastes differ. People say tastes differ and in different countries of the world they eat more unusual things. Would you agree to try some strange food such as iguana eggs? What is the strangest or the most delicious thing you have ever eaten? Describe the circumstances and the taste of the dish.
