Peer dictation (PW)

Material: cards with the words

Let students take equal amount of cards (one of them can distribute them like in the game of cards). They work in pairs and dictate their partner the words from the cards in pairs. When they are done, they take their partner’s work and check it. They take their works back and explain the spelling rules for the words with mistakes. To make it easier, they can turn to the Grammar reference p. 151.

The student with the biggest amount of correct words wins.

It can be done as grammar presentation in TTT approach, as students already know how to write most of the words. Then the teacher elicits the rules. To make it easier hey can first ask students to group all the words under 5 headings: Double the final consonant, Don’t double the final consonant; Change y to I, Drop the final –e, Adding prefixes.

2.4.1.Variation

Depending on the size of the group and the time available all the words can be divided not for every student, but for every pair. In this case they can work with cards that contain half of the words. The procedure is the same.

3.1. Grammar auction (T-Cl)

Material: cards with sentences for each student, money

Students first work individually and complete the gaps with correct option. Then they are told that they have a chance to participate in a grammar auction and win some money. All they have to do is to bet some money on the correct answer. (You give them equal amount of money + leave some in the bank to pay them if they are correct).

The winner is the richest student in the end.

The passive

3.2. Miming (S-Cl)

Material: action cards

Students come to the board, take an action card and show the action. Their groupmates describe the action in Passive: Drop: A pen has been dropped. The one who guesses takes the next card.

open close read write
put take give put on
brush cook wash sing

3.3. Unexpected sentences (GW)

Material: blank cards

Student A writes a person/an animal: my dad, George Bush, a purple flying alligator. (Encourage students to use their imagination and sense of humour – it will be funnier at the end). Student B writes place/time: at 4 o’clock, at the top of the Empire State Building. Student C writes a verb and a tense, e. g. throw – Past Simple, Student D the agent: by a person/an animal.

Then they put each type face down in a separate pile, so that they have 4 piles.

In turns students take a card from each pile and make a sentence: My classmate is being followed by a pig. It can be illogical, but it should be grammatically correct.

To make the activity more competitive it can be done in teams: The teams make sentences in turns and earn points for each correct sentence.

3.4. Passive quiz (PW)

Material: cards with sentences.

The material has been taken from Teach-This.com

Students complete the sentences with the correct passive form. Then they read their sentences to the partner. They have to guess if it is true or false. They are given 1 point for each correct answer.

At the end of the activity, ask students to tell the class which facts they found surprising.

3.5. Pelmanism (GW)

Material: blank pelmanism grid; cards with sentences (you can draw question marks on the back of the cards)

Students spread the cards out and take turns to turn over two cards. If the cards match, the student keeps the pair and has another go. If not, the cards are turned over (they are left on the same place) and the next student plays. They should be attentive as the sentences are tricky. The one with the most pairs wins.
