Project:
Bad Schmiedeberg
Расположение:
Germany, Bad Schmiedeberg
Architect:
Behrmann Consult
Size:
1,050 sqm
Date:
1993
Notes:
Bad Schmiedeburg, built in the early 1990's, is a prime example of innovative swimming pool structures.
Triangular Texlon ETFE panels are used to create a lightweight but transparent cladding solution to a Glulam (Glued Laminated) Timber grid shell frame. The Texlon ETFE cladding is immune to the highly humid, chlorinated environment and provides maximum insulation and light transmission.
Coupled with the polyurethane sheathed, Glulam timber frame, the entire structure is much more resistant to corrosion than equivalent structures that use galvanised and painted steelwork.
The lightweight nature of the Texlon ETFE cladding and its ability to accommodate larger than normal deflections also allows the primary structure to span much further distances with less material.

Notes:
Luxury Resorts commissioned the Office of Thierry Despont to develop concepts for renovation of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. The Palm Court was selected as one of the areas to be refurbished. The lobby was transformed from a conventional thoroughfare to a light filled, multi use space. The old roof was replaced by a transparent canopy floating above a grid of steel columns, which branch up in the form of palm trees. The result is an area that provides guests with an outdoor atmosphere, with the comforts of an indoor climate.
, Vector Foiltec engineered and fabricated both the complex steel structure and the ETFE transparent roof. Working closely with the design team Vector Foiltec developed a system that would meet the organic design concept and the rigorous hurricane code requirements.

Architect:
Atelier Bruckner
Size:
1,800 sqm
Date:
2000
Notes:
During the World Exposition 2000 in Hannover, Germany, the?Duales System?, a German recycling project, had a pavilion that utilized Texlon ETFE Foil Systems for both wall and roof envelopes.
The wall was a three layer system, with a positive/negative leaf pattern printed on the two outer layers. These foil cushions were pneumatically operated to allow the wall to change from a translucent to an opaque system, to enhance visuals during the performances shown within the building.
The roof of this pavilion was one of the World's largest ETFE foil cushions, over 25m in diameter, and featuring a series of fabric tubes within the system, that could expand or contract to adjust transparency of the system, in relation to the performance.
The Texlon system was selected for its variable transparency technologies and for its ecological characteristics. Not only are the materials in Vector Foiltec's system 'green', but even more profound are the sustainable design opportunities afforded.
The foil products have extremely low energy consumption during their manufacturing process, and the complete system weighs between 50 and 90 percent less than systems made from other materials with comparable properties, further reducing the amount of structural steel required to support the cladding.
Part of the system is manufactured from recycled materials and the entire system can ultimately be returned to our facility to be recycled at the end of the project's life. The Architect can explore green or sustainable design solutions for responsive, intelligent day lighting and dynamic thermal properties that can alter spatial characteristics and building performance.

Notes:
In the mid-1980s, Vector Foiltec became increasingly involved in the development of ozone research, using structures created with FEP foils.
These foils are highly transparent to the UV spectrum of light, allowing the analysis of air pollution effects on scaled simulations of atmosphere, for ozone deterioration within.
In the early 1990s, ETFE was substituted for the FEP because of its increased longevity, strength and transparency in the UV spectrum.
For the Saphir Chambers project, Vector Foiltec were approached directly to design a structure capable of completely blocking out light in under 30 seconds. Vector Foiltec's engineering department, Plantec GmbH, designed the complete structure and operable louvers to meet this criteria.
The louvers also double as protection for the sensitive single layer ETFE laboratory in extreme weather conditions.

Eden Project
Location:
United Kingdom, Cornwall
Architect:
Sir Nicolas Grimshaw & Partners
www.grimshaw-architects.com
Size:
30,000 sqm
Date:
2001
Notes:
In his time, Buckminster Fuller, the great pioneer and mentor of innovative architectural and structural visions, dreamed of roofing over entire cities to create new and exciting living spaces.
Today, Texlon ETFE Systems can turn this concept into reality, creating breathtaking indoor spaces, like the Eden Project.
Architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw sought to create an innovative enclosure for a tropical rain forest and Mediterranean biomes, more than 80m deep into a clay pit.
The Eden Project is the World's largest self-supported transparent envelope, with individual panels up to 80sqm in area. The biomes themselves are made up of 625 hexagons, 16 pentagons and 190 triangles. They contain 667 tonnes of steelwork and enclose 536 tonnes of air. The largest biome could enclose the Tower of London. Over 230 panels are intelligently controlled and operable for ventilation.
The Eden project requires maximum light penetration to ensure optimum plant growth around the year. The Texlon cladding system achieves this objective on three fronts. Firstly, Texlon ETFE is much more light transparent than glass - particularly in the UV spectrum that plants require. Secondly, Texlon ETFE self cleanses under the action of rain. Thirdly, the Texlon cladding system can be manufactured in much greater panel sizes, therefore minimising structural shading.
