Currently in the Podkarpackie the contribution of the population who is learning on the whole steps of education amount in all to 26% compared to the average for the Poland equivalent to 23%. The structure of the region's population in terms of education levels indicate that vocational education is dominant (about 50%). It is worth noting the increase of population with higher education from 10% to 16% over the years 2005-2010. A similar growth in the same period have also been reported in other Polish regions.

In the case of higher education and the number of students is comparable to the regions where are the major academic centers of the country. The participation of students in the age group 20-24 in Podkarpackie is considerably lower than average for Poland (respectively 19.7% and 29.3%).

The main universities of Podkarpackie region are: the University of Rzeszów and Rzeszów University of Technology, which account for over half (54%) of all students in public and private schools. According to the available rankings of universities in Poland, Rzeszów University consistently over the years is on 19-20 position among universities, the University of Technology is on 16-18 place among the technical universities.

The structure of educatory population in the universities by virtue of the course of studies indicates a larger proportion of people choosing social trends, rather than technical ones. In recent years there has been an increase in the percentage of students on higher technical schools, which situate the region on 6th place in the country.

In the last few years, we can observe a decrease in the total number of students in the Podkarpackie region (in the period 2006-2010 by almost 7%), which is primarily the result of demographic changes (decrease in the number of people aged 20-24 in the same period amounted to slightly more than 7%)

An increasingly important role in the education system is attributed to lifelong learning. In Poland, the percentage of lifelong learning in the corresponding age group is low and is currently around 5.3%. The situation is even worse in the Podkarpackie region: in 2010, corresponding to the percentage of the people was equal to only 3.4%, which situate the region on the last position in the country.

The largest number of students in the EU in relation to the number of inhabitants can boast Rzeszów, which 353 per 1000 inhabitants are students.

Rzeszów is the largest academic center in Podkarpacie. It is worth noting that from the academic year 2009/2010 to now, a process of rapid growth in the number of students in full-time, while, relatively
drastic decrease in the number of students in the non-stationary.

In the academic year 2011/2012 in 6 higher education institutions of all types in Rzeszow educated nearly 54 thousand of students, representing more than 75% of the total students in Podkarpackie. The largest universities in the city include the University of Rzeszów and University of Technology, which in the academic year 2011/2012 has chosen more than 69% of students.
