Nicola Tesla may have been the greatest scientist of all time but others got credit for his work.
Nicola Tesla was thousands of dollars in debt by the time he died on January 7, 1943. Stories of his eccentricity overshadowed his work. But at one time he was on top of the world. To this day, Tesla’s system of Alternating Current remains the basis for transmitting electricity power lines and drives induction motors. He would have 150 years old in 2006 and there has been a huge resurgence of interest in his work. At age five, Tesla built his own waterwheel, differentiated from the paddle wheels of the surrounding country by its flat sides. He briefly studied electrical engineering at the Austrian Polytechnic School. There, he developed a love for Alternating Current, and Voltaire.

Tesla immigrated to America in 1882 and was hired by Thomas Edison in New York City. He offered to improve Edison’s company’s turbines and Edison gave him the go-ahead. He promised Tesla a huge sum when the job was complete. But when he was finished, Edison reneged, which appalled Tesla and caused him to quit the company.
In 1888, Tesla built the motor he always dreamed of. The press dubbed him the “New Wizard of the West”. He next turned to new inventions like his remote controlled weapons and vehicles. Tesla wanted to market these to the military but was turned down. Undeterred, he had a laboratory built on land near Colorado Springs, Colorado, now home to the North American Air Defence command (NORAD).

He claimed that this network would allow us to communicate with Martians. He build one of the world’s first industrial parks, Wardenclyffe, on a 200 acre site near Shoreham, Long Island. Tesla hoped that this would be where he could realize his dreams.
However, he was disappointed. By 1905, he was deeply in debt and had to hire out Wardenclyffe to anyone who wanted it. With his situation growing more delicate, Wardenclyffe was the beginning of the end. In 1928, Tesla designed an aircraft that could take off and land vertically like a helicopter. Time magazine featured him on its cover in 1931, and he still had supporters and friends.
Nicola Tesla was probably about 20 years ahead of his time. Our present day world is what Tesla envisioned 100 years ago. But how far ahead would we be now if he had been taken more seriously?
