4. I have checked with my local Chinese Embassy that my passport is valid for the right length of time

&

5. I have applied for and received my visa for entry into China

Visas and residence permits are important and necessary documents which allow you to legally complete your studies. Procedures for obtaining and extending these documents can be complicated. Therefore, please read the following information carefully and direct all questions to the International Office to ensure that you do not encounter any visa or residence problems.

There are two types of student visa that you may consider:

1) A study visa (X) issued to those who study in China for more than 6 months. Holders of this visa must go through residential formalities at the local ‘Entry-Exit Administration of Public Security Bureau’ within 30 days of entry into China. Please see the Residence Permit section for more about this process.

2) A visiting visa (F) for students studying for less than 6 months. F visa holders will not be allowed to travel outside of China (including travel to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) and re-enter during their stay in China, as this is a single entry visa. If you will be studying in China for 6 months or less, and you also want to travel outside of China, please apply for a double entry visa.

Please be aware that the following documents will be required for your student visa application:

· Your current passport with at least twelve months of validity and at least one blank visa page.

· One complete and signed Visa Application Form with one passport photo

· An approved Foreign Student Visa Application Form (JW202 Form) issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education. A JW202 Form is the form of Visa Application for Study in China. It’s obtained by the University from the local Education Department to support your visa application. It is one of the necessary documents to apply for the Student Visa (X type visa) or Business Visa (F type visa) to China.

· Your acceptance letter from UNNC, both the original and one photocopy (the original will be checked and returned to you).

· Medical certificate (please check with local Chinese embassy if you need a medical certificate or not).

We suggest that you contact your local Chinese Embassy or Consulate for further information.

Residence permit:

It is often normal to hold a visa with validity shorter than your intended period of study. If this applies to you, please discuss this with the International Office upon your arrival in Ningbo. They will guide you through the process of obtaining a residence permit.

I haven’t received my offer pack or visa invitation letter:

Please contact international@nottingham.edu.cn as soon as possible.

6. I have my original unconditional offer letter

Remember to bring your unconditional offer letter with you so that you can complete registration.

I haven’t received my offer letter:

Please contact admissions@nottingham.edu.cn as soon as possible.

7. I have an original of my medical report, laboratory result and X-ray film. (If you completed a medical check in your home country for your visa application and will apply for a residence permit in China)

The Public Security Bureau of China requires all foreign nationals seeking residency in China to provide or obtain a health certificate. To obtain one, you will need to have a complete physical examination which shows you are in good health and free of any communicable diseases (including a HIV test, chest x-ray, ECG, etc.). You can get the form for a ‘Physical Examination Record for Foreigners’ from your Chinese Embassy or Consulate. Take this form to the local public hospital or designated medical institution in order to conduct the medical. The medical result should be authenticated by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

In order to be exempt from undergoing a full medical check again in China, you should bring all the original manuscripts including your medical report, laboratory results and x-ray film, with you to UNNC. You will still be required to travel to the hospital and purchase a health certificate, but at a reduced fee.

8. I have at least 5 photocopies of my passport and two copies of my visa

Upon arrival at UNNC there will be times when copies of your passport and visa will be required. It is also advisable to always carry a passport and visa copy with you, in case of being stopped by a police officer.

9. I have Chinese currency, a credit card (and/or debit card with overseas access) and cash available for the journey and for the first three to four weeks.

We estimate that you will need around 3000RMB to 4000RMB in cash for the first three to four weeks. This amount includes the following items:

  1. Health Check (if applicable): 465RMB in cash
  2. Residence Permit application fee (if applicable): 400RMB for 6-10 months/800RMB for 10 month to 3 years/1000RMB for more than 3 years.
  3. Room Key deposit: 200RMB in cash
  4. Food: 1500RMB
  5. Transportation: 200RMB
  6. Other: 500RMB

There is a campus ATM (Bank of China) on the High Street and a number of ATMs in Ningbo which accept a range of foreign credit and debit cards. However, please note that overseas bank cards have a certain limit on the amount of cash that you are able to withdraw per day, (please check with your bank for detailed information).

It is also advisable to inform your bank that you will travel to China before you depart, so that they do not prevent the use of your bank cards in China.

10. I have purchased medical insurance (students studying for 6 months of less)

For students who will stay in China for less than six months, you can buy insurance before you travel. When purchasing insurance, you should ask the insurance company for details on how to use your medical insurance in China and who to contact for medical services. Students should present proof of their medical insurance to the University, to prove that they have insurance that covers Accidental Injury and Hospitalization for the period of their studies. The proof can be in Chinese or English.

Students studying for longer than six months will be required to purchase medical insurance upon arrival from the Finance Office.

11. I have paid all of my first year fees

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China provides a University bank account for you to pay your fees into. This account can accept payments in any currency with it being advisable (wherever possible) to pay through a ‘Bank of China’ branch. If you are inside China we suggest that you make the payment in RMB. As the Finance Office can only accept Bank of China bank cards and withdrawals from foreign debit/credit cards have a certain limit per day, we recommend you arrange for payments to be made before the following deadlines:

September entry: two weeks prior to your arrival

February entry: December 30th

We advise you to use Telegraphic Transfer (TT) rather than other remit methods since it is relatively quick and economical. Please indicate your full name on the remittance (receipt) for our identification, and bring this with you.

For detailed fee information please refer to the ‘Fee Information’ which was sent to you together with your offer letter.
