2.2. THE VERB LET FOR THE IMPERATIVE

Ex.4. Translate the following imperative sentences into Russian:

 

1. Please, let me know what happened. 2. Don’t let the fire go out. 3. Let’s start at once. 4. Don’t let’s start yet. 5. Let me see - where did I leave my hat? 6. Let us both have a try. 7. Let there be no doubt. 8. Let AB be equal to CD. 9. Let ABC be an angle of ninety degrees. 10. Let them do their worst! 11. Let them all come. 12. Let the poor dog be! 13. Let me go! 13.1 don’t agree with all you say but we’ll let it go at that. 14. Let it alone!

 

THE EMPHATIC IMPERATIVE

 

Ex. 5. Make the following imperative sentences more emphatic or polite:

Ex.7. Make sentences beginning Do be or Don’t be for the following situations. Use the words and expressions in the box:

Example: You are a parent: your child is eating too much. Don’t be so greedy.

1. Your child is going to cycle to school through heavy traffic. 2. You are just going to tell somebody that you have damaged their car. 3. Your fourteen-year-old child is going out to a party. 4. You are going into a room where a nervous old lady is alone in the dark. 5. Your ten-year-old child has just told you she is going to leave home. 6. You are arranging to meet somebody who is usually late. 7. Your child has just told you to shut up. 8. Your boyfriend / girlfriend is upset because you went out with somebody else.

2.4. ALWAYS & NEVER WITH THE IMPERATIVE

Ex. 8. Put in always or never and translate into Russian:

 

1. Add salt to potatoes when you cook them. 2. Check the tyres before you drive a car. 3. Cook chicken when it’s frozen. 4. Wait more than fifteen minutes for somebody who’s late. 5. Unplug electrical appliances before repairing them. 6. Count your change after buying something. 7. Put off till tomorrow what you can do today. 8. Say “I will love you for ever”. 9. Pay bills the day you get them. 10. Apologize for things that are not your fault.
