Speak about the typical British weekend.

Everyone looks forward to the weekend. Students, young people working away from home and single people in general like to go away for the weekend. They may go home, go to stay with friends or stay in a hotel in the country or at the sea. Those who stay at home try both to relax and catch up with all the jobs. For women these include housework, sewing, washing, shopping; for men – cleaning the car, mowing the lawn, repairs and other odd jobs in the house. They usually go shopping in Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon the most important sporting events of the week take place. Men go and watch or watch on TV. Saturday evening is the favorite time for going out. For many people it is the climax of the weekend. Having gone to bed late the night before, many people have a lie-in on Sunday morning. When they have eaten breakfast and read Sunday newspapers they may decide to go out; but people wait traditionally Sunday lunch which is the most important family meal of the week. After what often seems quite a short while it is tea time. Then some people spend evening at home, others go out. But the realization the weekend is over casts a slight melancholy.

12. What is the best way of spending the weekend from your point of view?

Nowadays people work all day long and rarely have spare time to rest and to do something they like. And the weekend is often the only time to do what you want. There are plenty of things to do that can help you not to feel bored. Any activity is much better than doing nothing. I'd like to notice that there are two main ways of spending the weekend: the one is to do some physical activities (often outdoors), for example, football, swimming, hockey, skiing; and another way is to enjoy something relaxing at home or in special places: reading, watching TV, knitting, engaging in hand-made. As for me, I like to pass my weekend both in active and passive way. I really enjoy reading or watching films, because it's always interesting, helpful and helps to relax, what is especially necessary after a long tiring day. Also I am fond of active sports, swimming, skiing or riding a bike from time to time, when it is possible. Sometimes you feel you need to escape from everyday worries and to do something no thought-provoking. In many cases I can't let me doing anything very extraordinary, so I just go walking over long distances. It really helps to release the tension and refresh the mind. I also meet with my friends, usually we can meet only during the weekend, because we all are studying and busy during the week.
