Explain the differentiation of the tendencies of Cognitive Linguistics’ development and their correspondence with its objectives
The forth step of the science developing distinguishes some tendencies in its system and conception’s forming. The tendencies are grounded on the knowledge of both Linguistics and psychology.
Four main tendencies of Cognitive Linguistics’ development grounded on psychological knowledge:
1) Description and explanation of the mechanisms that connect stimuli and responses, peculiar enter and exit of a human “computer”;
2) Studying the phenomena of human inner mental nature;
3) Emphasizing Person as the main motive of his activity;
4) Studying the peculiarities of the cognitive processes in comparison with temporary insanity.
Theories of Personality as the Ground for Cognitive Linguistics' Developing
# | Version of Cognitive Linguistics (according to Dem’ianenkov) | Its subject | Theory of Personality (its representatives) | Main ideas in Theories of Personality |
Description and explanation of the mechanisms that connect stimuli and reaction, peculiar enter and exit of a human “computer” | Mechanisms that connect stimuliand reaction | Behaviorism (B.F. Skinner) | Human behaviour and social activity is caused and stipulated by the function of the main motivating mechanism stimuli-reaction
Studying the phenomena of the human inner mental nature | Human inner mental nature | Cognitive Theory of Person (G. Kelly) | Through his cognitive processes and on the ground of individually formed cognitive constructs Person prognoses his future activity
Emphasizing Person as the main motive of his activity | Person as the main motive of his activity | Theory of Self Actualization (A. Maslow, K. Rogers, V. Frankl, R. May) | Creative Person has innately good natureand tends to release it and realize completely and as much as possible
Studying the peculiarities of the cognitive process in comparison with affects | Cognitiveprocess in comparison with temporary insanity | Psychoanalysis (Z. Freid, A. Adler, K. Ung, E. Erikson) | Human behavior and social activity is caused and stipulated by the complex and intricate relation of instincts, motives and inclinations that struggle for superiority, which often results in conflicts that not rarely finds its reflection in affects |
(Generative Grammar (linguist, psycholinguist Noam Chomsky), Theory of embodied Cognition (cognitive scientists and linguists George Lakoff and Mark Johnson), Theory of Knowledge Conceptualization (linguist, psycholinguist V. Levelt), Semantic approach (linguists and cognitive scientists Helen Kubriakova, Ivan Sternin), Cultural approach (cultural scientist, linguist Uriy Stepanov))
