The following are useful places to keep you culturally connected to your home country and fellow expats, and are also a good place to meet internationally minded Shanghainese.

On hand is a large French library with magazines, newspapers, DVDs and music CDs; exhibitions, music concerts and literary events are also held. The centre also offers French-language courses and internet access. There is a branch (; 6226 4005; 2nd fl, 155 Wuyi Rd) in the west of town and another branch ( 6782 7961; 20-22, Lane 58, Longteng Rd) in Songjiang.

Changshu Rd) Of interest mainly to Chinese wishing to study in the UK, but also supports arts and cultural programs in China. Phone ahead as the office does not offer drop-in access.

US Consulate Bureau of Public Affairs (; 6279 7662; room 532, Shanghai Centre, 1376 West Nanjing Rd; 1376 532) Has a reading room with American newspapers and periodicals.
