Chinese customs generally pay tourists little attention. There are clearly marked green channels and red channels. Importation of fresh fruit or cold cuts is prohibited. Pirated DVDs and CDs are illegal exports from China as well as illegal imports into most other countries. If they are found they will be confiscated. Duty-free, you can bring in:

» 400 cigarettes (or 100 cigars or 500g of tobacco)

» 1.5 litres of alcoholic drink

» 50g of gold or silver

» Y20000 in Chinese currency (there are no restrictions on foreign currency but declare any cash that exceeds US$5000, or its equivalent in another currency)

Objects considered to be antiques require a certificate and a red seal to clear customs when leaving China. Anything made before 1949 is considered an antique, and if it was made before 1795 it cannot legally be taken out of the country.

Embassies & Consulates

Most consulates defer to their embassies in Beijing; the offices listed below are consulates-general. Most consulates have efficient websites with useful information, from doing business in Shanghai to cultural relations, events and downloadable maps of town.

If you are planning a trip to Southeast Asia, you’ll have to go to Beijing or Hong Kong for a visa for Vietnam, Laos or Myanmar (Burma). There is a Vietnamese consulate in Kunming (in Yunnan province), as well as Thai, Lao and Myanmar consulates in Kunming.

Gay & Lesbian Travellers

Local law is ambiguous on this issue; generally the authorities take a dim view of gays and lesbians but there’s a growingly confident scene, as evinced by gay bars and the annual event-stuffed Shanghai Pride (www.shpride.com), going since 2009. Young Chinese men sometimes hold hands; this carries no sexual overtones in China.

For up-to-date information on the latest gay and lesbian hotspots in Shanghai and elsewhere throughout China, try the Utopia website (www.utopia-asia.com/chinshan.htm). City Weekend also runs a bimonthly gay and lesbian column.

Health

Health concerns for travellers to Shanghai include pollution, traveller’s diarrhoea and winter influenza. You can find a more-than-adequate standard of medical care here, providing you have good travel insurance.

If you have arrived from South America or Central Africa, you are required to show proof of a yellow-fever vaccination within the last 10 years.

It’s a good idea to consult your own government’s official travel-health website before departure.
