Internet Access

The Chinese authorities remain highly mistrustful of the internet, and censorship here is heavy-handed, employing an army of 30,000 censors. The authorities block around 10% of websites; sites like Google may be slow, while social-networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are blocked (as is YouTube). Some users get around blocked websites by using a proxy like g-proxy.com, downloading an add-on such as Gladder (for Firebox browsers) or using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.

Occasionally email providers can go down, so having a backup email address is advised.

The majority of hostels and hotels have broadband internet access and many hotels, cafes, restaurants and bars are wi-fi enabled. Remember that wi-fi is generally unsecured, so take care what kind of information you enter if you’re using a wireless connection.

Email Centres & Internet Cafes

Internet cafe charges start at around Y3 per hour; the cafes are typically either open 24 hours or from 8am to midnight.

You will need some form of ID to register; take your passport. Some internet cafes in Shanghai and surrounding provinces may require Chinese ID to get online, thus barring foreign users (which can leave you stuck if you need to respond to emails), so be prepared.

Internet cafes are now scarce in touristy areas – it’s more convenient to get online at your hotel or at a wi-fi hotspot. Besides the places listed below, many bars and cafes are wi-fi-equipped. The easiest way to find the nearest internet cafe is to ask someone if there is a wangba nearby. Some Tourist and Information Service Centres allow you to go online for free.

Internet Cafe (Wangba;; 3rd fl, 565 Dongchang Rd; per hr Y4; 8am-midnight) Just off South Pudong Rd.

Internet Cafe (Wangba;; per hr Y5; 24hr) Down the escalator across the road opposite the main Shanghai Railway Station.

Internet Cafe (Wangba Youyicheng;; 5th fl, eastern entrance to Duolun Rd; per hr Y3; 24hr)

Jidu Internet Cafe (Jidu Wangluo;; 2nd fl, cnr Changle Rd & North Xiangyang Rd; per hr Y3; 24hr)

Shanghai Library (Shanghai Tushuguan;; 1555 Middle Huaihai Rd; 1555 per hr Y4; 8.30am-8.30pm) Has an internet room (open from 9am to 8.30pm) and is the cheapest and most pleasant place in the city for internet use (minimum one hour). Bring your passport or ID if you have no library card. Connections are generally pretty fast. Wi-fi access is available from 3.30pm to 8.30pm.
