Academia in the process of globalization. Its intercultural nature

Ukraine has demonstrated its aspiration to meet the international standards of higher education and join the European Higher Education Area the central issues of which are formulated in the Bologna Declaration. The language of the documents is English. Most of the technical words, i.e. academic terms, are registered in European Glossary and European Education Thesaurus. The key words of the Bologna Declaration are: European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), transferability, credit transfer and accumulation system, mobility of students and staff, tuning, quality assurance network, lifelong learning, degree curriculа which are usually rendered into Ukrainian as follows:

ECTS – європейська система зарахування/перезарахування/ взаємозарахування кредитів;

credit transfer and accumulation system – система взаємозарахування та акумуляції/накопичення кредитів;

mobility of students and staff – мобільність/переміщення студентів та викладацького складу;

tuning – узгодження/гармонізація навчального процесу;

quality assurance network – мережа університетів, що забезпечують якісну освіту/дотримуються вимог високоякісної освіти;

lifelong learning (LLL) – навчання протягом життя;

degree curriculа – програма, по завершенні/виконанні якої надається науковий ступінь (бакалавра, магістра), дипломна підготовка бакалавра/магістра

Most of internationally accepted academic terms contain descriptive and synonymic elements.

Liberal Arts Education as a realia of American higher education system has no adequate Ukrainian translation. It is rendered as „ліберальна освіта” та „освіта для вільного розвитку, тобто навчання, що враховує і суспільні потреби, й індивідуальні інтереси, здібності та уподобання особи”. In the US Liberal Arts Education is close to Humanities. They include the areas of learning which develop someone’s the ability to think and increase their general knowledge, rather than developing technical skills (Longman Advanced American Dictionary).

A vivid example of ambiguous rendering of the the following terms in Ukrainian academic discourse are the terms undergraduate and graduate student. Thus graduate student is usually translated as “випускник вищої школи”(higher school). But in AE undergraduate is a student in the first four years of college who is working for their first degree (Bachelor degree). Undergraduate study охоплює навчальну програму, що хронологічно слідує за повною середньою освітою (high school), триває 4 роки, після успішного виконання якої надається ступінь бакалавра. Graduate Program at American universities leads to a Master degree.
