(Touming Sikao; Xintiandi North Block, Bldg 11; 181 11 11.30am-1am; South Huangpi Rd, Xintiandi) A place to visit as much for the decor as for the drinks, TMSK is designed within an inch of its life. The whole place is full of swirled pastel-coloured glass (liuli; Click here), but the interior design pales into insignificance once the house band gets going with its unholy fusion of techno and traditional Chinese music (Friday and Saturday at 8.30pm).

(Lunhui Jiuba; Basement, 125 Nanchang Rd; 125 6pm-4am; South Shaanxi Rd; ) Once home to the Shanghai underground scene (way back in the 1990s), YY’s has successfully remained on the fringes of the city’s consciousness without ever becoming too hip. Now relegated to the basement, it continues to attract an alternative crowd and has its own rough-edged appeal, which increases as night blurs into dawn.

Tea Tasting

It may be a rather cliched choice, but there’s no doubt that a Yixing teapot and a package of oolong tea makes for a convenient gift. But how do you go about a purchase? Two things to remember: first, taste (pinchang) and compare several different teas – flavours vary widely, and there’s no point in buying a premium grade if you don’t like it. Tasting is free (mianfei) and fun, but it’s good form to make some sort of purchase afterwards. Second, tea is generally priced by the jin (500g), which may be more tea than you can finish in a year. Purchase several liang (50g) instead – divide the list price by 10 for an idea of the final cost. Some of the different types of tea for sale include oolong (wulong), green (lǜ), flower (hua) and pu-erh (pu’er) – true connoisseurs have a different teapot for each type of tea.

Try the following stores.
