PREPOSITIONS OF SPACE
В английском языке (в отличие от русского) среди предлогов пространства выделяются предлоги со значением динамики и статики.
Он живёт в этом городе.-He lives in this city.
Он идёт в кино.-He is going to the cinema.
Предлоги статики:
at The chair is at the wall.
in There is a table in the room.
on There is a book on the table.
under There is a box under the table.
around There is a garden around the house.
Предлоги динамики:
across The river runs across the field.
along The boy is running along the street.
away from Go away from the window.
round The dog is running round the house.
into Put the book into the bag.
out of Take the book out of the bag.
off \from Take the book off\from the table.
to Come to the table.
through No light comes through the window.

Prepositions ABOVE, OVER
Оба предлога имеют значение «выше, чем» и в некоторых случаях могут быть взаимозаменяемыми.
The water came up above/over their knees.
В остальных случаях эти предлоги употребляются дифференцированно.
Above – 1) при измерении величин по вертикальной шкале:
It was 5 degrees above zero.
2) в выражении above the sea level (над уровнем моря):
The summit of the mountain is 2 meters above the sea level.
Over – 1) со значением «пересечение, покрытие»:
Our plane was flying over the city.
2) при выражении количества:
There were over 2000 people in the square.

Prepositions ACROSS, THROUGH
Оба предлога обозначают движение с одной стороны определённой поверхности к другой стороне.
Предлог across соотносится по значению с предлогом on (движение происходит по поверхности площади):
They walked across the lake.
Предлог through соотносится с предлогом in (передвижение в трёхмерном пространстве):
They walked through the forest.
Он не употребляется для обозначения движения вдоль «длинных и тонких» предметов типа river, road, corridor, line, etc.
The boat moved across the river.

Prepositions BEFORE, IN FRONT OF
Оба предлога имеют значение «перед», однако, предлог before функционирует как пространственный предлог лишь в определённых случаях:
- При обозначении порядка расположения (в списках и т.д.).
Her name comes before mine in the list.
- Со значением «в присутствии важного лица».
He came before the judge for the misconduct.
- В устойчивых выражениях “right before my eyes”, “before my very eyes”.

Prepositions of space AT, IN
Предлог at употребляется для обозначения точного пункта(houses, stations, small villages, etc.). Предлог in употребляется для обозначения более обширного пространства (bigger towns, villages, countries, etc.).
I met her in the street.
She was standing at the corner of the street.

Prepositions BETWEEN, AMONG
Предлог between употребляется:
- когда речь идёт о двух предметах (лицах);
I can’t choose between the two houses.
- при передаче отношений между говорящим и группой лиц;
Ladies and Gentlemen! Between us, I have very important information.
Предлог among употребляется в том случае, когда речь идёт более, чем о двух предметах (лицах).
The traveller wrote about his life among the Indians.

Prepositions BESIDE, BESIDES
Предлог beside означает «рядом».
Who is sitting beside your brother?
Besides может выступать в функции как предлога, так и наречия. Предлог besides означает «кроме». Значение «кроме» имеет также предлог except, которыйчастоошибочноупотребляетсявместопредлога besides.
Дифференциация значений этих предлогов заключается в следующем:
besides означает дополнительно к названному,
except кроме названного.
Besides German and English, she knows Spanish.
She knows all the European languages except Dutch.

Prepositions of space FROM, OFF, OF, OUT OF
Предлог from употребляется для обозначения пункта отправления.
The train started from the station at 8 sharp.
Предлог of употребляется в устойчивых выражениях в значении, аналогично значению from:
die of, made of, ask of, expect of.
Предлог off имеет значение «с поверхности чего-либо» или сверху вниз.
Take the book off the table.
He fell off the stairs.
Предлог out of имеет значение «изнутри наружу», его антоним предлог into.
She took the notebook out of her bag.

Prepositions IN, WITH, OF
(describing people and clothes)
Предлог in употребляетсясовсеми предметами, которые может носить человек (clothes, jewelry, etc.).
A woman in gold earrings.
A man in a blue shirt.
Предлог with употребляется со всеми предметами, которые можно носить, при упоминании черт внешности или физических особенностей (болезней).
A girl with a black handbag.
A man with a stick.
A boy with red hair.
A man with a limp.
Предлог of употребляется с названиями постоянных черт характера и при обозначении возраста.
A man of quiet temper.
A woman of thirty-five.
