BIOGRAPHY
Walt Disney was born on 5December 1901, in Chicago. He grew up there, and was one of the first people to go into the new movie business. His early film work consisted of advertisements, but they were not very successful!
So Walt decided to move to Hollywood. It was a good decision. He made two silent animated films with a new cartoon character called Mickey Mouse. They were instantly popular. Mickey appeared in his first ‘talking picture’ in 1928. The film was called Steamboat Willie. Soon, Mickey and his pals Minnie and Donald Duck were international superstars, and their creator, Walt Disney, was a millionaire.
Later, Disney made films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Bambi (1942). They are still the most popular films of all time.
Disney was also the man who invented ‘theme parks’. The most famous are Disneyland in Anaheim, California; Disney World in Orlando, Florida; and Euro Disney in Paris, France.
Walt Disney died in 15 December 1966 at the age of sixty-five.

On Friday 3rd August, 1492, 87 men left the port of Palos in Spain in three ships. They wanted to find a new route from Europe to India. Their leader was Christopher Columbus.
Columbus thought that the world was round. This wasn’t a popular theory in the fifteenth century. He wanted to find a western route to the spice islands and gold of the East Indies. So he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.
The three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina, sailed to San Sebastian in the Canary Islands, a voyage of ten days. On 6th September, they began their voyage across the Atlantic.
It wasn’t an easy journey. Sometimes the weather was stormy, sometimes the ships didn’t move for days. Suddenly, on the morning of 12th October, the ships arrived at an island. Columbus named the island San Salvador.
Columbus wrote in his diary: ”We saw naked natives, green trees and fruits of various types. All the time I was in India, it rained every day”.
Later, when he was near Cuba, he wrote: “I think that from here to the mainland of India is a journey of only ten days”.
Columbus crossed the Atlantic four times. On his third voyage (in 1498), he wrote: “Are we really near the coast of India? I am beginning to have doubts ….”
Columbus wanted to find a route to India. He didn’t do it. By mistake, he discovered the existence of an ‘unknown’ continent, America.
