Motivations

One of the traditional tasks of novelists has been simply to seem true to their characters’ motivations. Everyone has their unspoken needs and their reasons. For much of its history, the Novel has been dedicated to discovering ever more discriminating ways of conveying the complexities (дискриминационные способы передачи сложности) of human motivation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fiction seemed to have reached the ultimate extent (достигать максимальной / высшей степени) of such exploration in the novels of Henry James or Marcel Proust, writers for whom actual events became totally subordinate to (уступать по значимости) psychological exactitude. These novelists have deeply influenced later writers and readers. Subtlety of motivation is presumed to be a virtue of fiction (тонкость мотивации считается достоинством фантастики).
