Over 20 million people work in the coffee industry. Coffee is worth more money than any other industry in the world except oil. In Brazil about 30,000,000 coffee plants are looked after every year. Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia. A man called Khalid who was looking after his goats noticed that his goats were very energetic after eating a certain kind of plants. He decided to try this himself and found that they gave him a lot of energy. The coffee drink was first made in Turkey in 1555. By the 18th century, coffee became an important part of European life.
