В данных методических рекомендациях представлены основные принципы работы с мультимедийным компьютерным курсом “Learn to Speak English”.
Методические рекомендации состоят из 3-х частей: введения, описания курса и сетевого плана работы на 1 семестр и приложения.
Данные рекомендации предназначены для студентов неязыковых факультетов и преподавателей, работающих с мультимедийным компьютерным курсом “Learn to Speak English”

Введение
Содержанием учебной деятельности являются теоретические знания, овладение которыми посредством этой деятельности развивает у учащихся основы теоретического сознания и мышления, а также творчески-личностный уровень осуществления практических видов деятельности.
Усвоение знаний при учебной деятельности расширяет сознание и мышление учащегося, но не развивает их, т.е. от обучения не стоит ожидать развивающего творческие способности эффекта. Для этого необходимо создавать специальные проблемные условия при обучении, способствующие творческому развитию личности. Поэтому, как отмечается в теории развивающего обучения, создание таких условий имеет большое практическое значение.
Одним из таких условий является использование компьютерных технологий в процессе обучения и, в частности, при обучении студентов неязыковых ВУЗов иностранному языку.
Предоставление учебной информации на СD обладает мощными средствами наглядности. В отличие от книги здесь помимо текста и графики могут размещаться звуковые, анимационные и видеофрагменты. Звуковые карты позволяют записать речь, прослушать, сравнить с произношением носителя языка. Синтез текста с имитацией диалога, обогащенный мультимедийными эффектами, создает педагогический комплекс, способствующий значительному облегчению процесса усвоения, т.к. изображение на экране монитора позволяет ассоциироватьфразу на иностранном языке непосредственно с действием, а не с фразой на родном языке.
Применение ПК позволяет наилучшим образом реализовать метод индивидуального обучения иностранному языку, т.к. обучающийся изучает учебный текст в доступном ему темпе, имея возможность еще раз проработать вызывающий трудности материал, самостоятельно исправить допущенные ошибки и оценить результат.
Мультимедийный компьютерный курс “Learn to Speak English” является комплексным учебным пособием по изучению английского языка, преследующим как общеобразовательные, так и чисто практические цели.
Пособие содержит обширный страноведческий материал, знакомит с лингвистическими особенностями американского варианта английского языка. Грамматический материал представлен теоретической и практической частями и охватывает весь спектр грамматических явлений, необходимых для успешного осуществления коммуникации на английском языке.
Мультимедийный компьютерный курс “Learn to Speak English” состоит из 30 уроков, связанных единой сюжетной линией, 10 фильмов - экскурсий по крупнейшим городам США и 10 дополнительных лексико-грамматических игр.
Для получения наилучшего результата при работе с данным компьютерным курсом, рекомендуется планировать свою работу в определенной последовательности:
Каждый урок, в свою очередь, имеет унифицированную структуру из 9 элементов, соответствующих поставленным задачам.
1 – INTRODUCTION – введение – первый этап знакомства с уроком. Здесь сообщается тема занятия и ставятся задачи, решаемые в ходе урока.
2 – VOCABULARY – словарь – базовый этап урока. Здесь собраны все слова, встречающиеся в изучаемой теме в алфавитном порядке. Цель – расширение активного словарного запаса в рамках изучаемой темы. Для успешного освоения необходимо:
· внимательно ознакомиться с данным словарем;
· прочитать предлагаемые комментарии к словам;
· рассмотреть иллюстрацию слова;
· прослушать, как диктор произносит каждое слово отдельно и в контексте предложения;
· повторить за диктором и добиться похожего произношения;
· уточнить значение слова в англо-русском словаре.
Убедившись, что каждое слово теперь легко узнаваемо, можно переходить к следующему этапу урока.
3 – STORY – рассказ – небольшой текст, в нескольких предложениях описывающий ситуацию урока. Цель – получение навыков монологического высказвания по теме. Для успешного усвоения необходимо:
· прослушать весь текст целиком;
· вернуться к началу текста, прослушать первое предложение отдельно;
· если смысл предложения ясен, повторить его за диктором, имитируя его произношение и интонацию;
· если в предложении встречаются незнакомые слова, вернуться к работе над пунктом 2 (vocabulary);
· проработать подобным образом каждое предложение текста.
Для контроля усвоения материала рекомендуется подготовить пересказ содержания текста.
4 – CULTURAL NOTES – страноведческие сведения. Материал содержит дополнительную информацию о культуре, нравах и обычаях США. Цель – ознакомление со страной изучаемого языка. Рекомендуется внимательно изучить изложенную информацию, сравнить с существующей ситуацией в нашей стране.
5 – ACTION – диалог – коммуникативная часть урока. Цель – получение навыков ситуативно-обусловленного диалогического высказывания. Для этого рекомендуется:
· прослушать весь диалог целиком;
· вернуться к началу диалога и проработать каждую реплику так же, как и в пункте 3;
· воспроизвести данный диалог по ролям;
Для контороля полученных навыков следует составить подобный диалог в измененной ситуации.
5 – LISTENING SKILLS – упражнение на аудирование. Нажмите кнопку “BEGIN”, прослушайте слово, впечатайте его в соответствующий пропуск, нажмите “ENTER”. Если пропуск заполнен правильно, прозвучит все предложение целиком, если неправильно – нажмите “LISTEN AGAIN” и повторите попытку еще раз. При существенных затруднениях в выполнении данного упражнения рекомендуется вернуться к работе над пунктами 2, 3 и 5.
6 – GRAMMAR REFERENCE – грамматический материал. Внимательно ознакомьтесь с изложенными грамматическими правилами и комментариями, запомните основные положения и выучите исключения наизусть.
7 – GRAMMAR EXERCISES – грамматические упражнения. Предлагаемые упражнения помогут закрепить полученные теоретические знания на практике. При наличии трудностей в выполнении, вернитесь к пункту 6.
8 – WORD JUMBLE – «словесная путаница». Данное упражнение помогает закрепить полученные лексические и грамматические навыки. В нужном порядке «щелкайте» по словам в левой колонке, выстраивая правильное предложение в правой. Если выбран правильный вариант, то предложение прозвучит целиком вместе с одобрительным комментарием. При неверном ответе предложение вернется назад в левую колонку. Составив все пять предложений, нажмите “RESET JUMBLE”, повторите попытку снова, переведите полученные предложения на русский язык. Нажмите “MORE JUMBLE”, появится новая порция предложений, проработайте их по вышеизложенной схеме.
9 – COMMUNICATION SKILLS – заключительный тест. Цель – контроль полученных лексических, грамматических н коммуникативных навыков. Данный тест состоит из 10 вопросов (10 очков) и может выполняться в режиме “RECORDING” – “прослушивание” и “TYPING” – “впечатывание”. Выбрав “RECORDING”, нажмите “BEGIN”, прослушайте задание либо с подсказкой на экране, либо без нее (соответственно “SHOW ENGLISH” и “HIDE ENGLISH”). Вверху экрана нажмите красную кнопку “RECORD” проговорите свой вариант ответа в микрофон. Затем нажмите зеленую кнопку “PLAY” и сравните свой ответ с эталоном. Продолжите выполнение теста, нажав на кнопку “CONTINUE”.
Выбрав режим “TYPING” – нажмите “BEGIN”, прослушайте задание (с подсказкой или без), в окошко “YOUR ANSWER” впечатайте свой вариант ответа, нажмите “ENTER”. Если задание выполнено правильно, Вы получаете 1 очко, если нет – неправильная часть ответа будет выделена черным цветом. Скорректируйте свой ответ и нажмите “ENTER” еще раз. Правильный ответ можно посмотреть, нажав “SHOW ANSWER”. При трудностях в выполнении этого теста рекомендуется вернуться к пунктам 2,3,5,6,7,8.
CULTURAL MOVIE – фильм - экскурсия по городу. Данный материал имеет широкие возможности для использования на уроке. Рекомендуется прослушать весь комментарий целиком, одновременно следя за демонстрируемыми достопримечательностями города. При повторном прослушивании внимательно ознакомиться с предлагаемым текстом комментариев, уточнив значение незнакомых слов в англо-русском словаре. Убрав текст комментариев с экрана, попробовать провести экскурсию по городу самостоятельно.
GAMES – лексико-грамматические игры. Рекомендуется использовать их в качестве дополнительного материала к изучаемому курсу.
Стевой план работы на первый семестр приведен в таблице 1.

Lesson 1 «Immigration and Customs»
Vocabulary:

The indefinite article "a" is used in front of words that begin with a consonant sound; "an" is used in front of words that begin with a vowel or vowel sounds (as in "an apple," "an hour," etc.).

All countries, nationalities, and names of languages are capitalized in English. (E.g.: "Jean is from Canada." "Paul is British." "Andrei speaks Russian.")

"To be about to" is a useful way to express that one "is ready to" do something. Another way to express the same idea is to use the expression "to be close to" as in "Scott is close to finishing his book."

You can make the possessive form of any singular noun simply by adding apostrophe (') and "s" ("Jeff's book"). For plural nouns that end in "-s," simply add an apostrophe ("my parents' car"). For plural nouns that do not end in "-s" simply add apostrophe and "s" ("the children's toys").
baggage (noun as adj.)
Although the word "baggage" is considered a noun, it functions as an adjective in the expression "baggage claim." This is quite frequent in English and will be noted in the vocabulary section throughout the course as a "noun as adj." Remember to click "HEAR IN CONTEXT" to see and hear how the word is used in the context of a sentence.

Modal auxiliaries are extremely useful components of verbal expressions which you will practice throughout this course. They readily take on infinitives as in the following examples: "I can speak English." "You cannot understand." etc.

The word "customs" not only refers to a place where issues of nationality are discussed (such as in an "international airport"), but also refers to the "traditions" of a people or culture. (E.g.: "Americans make a custom of preparing turkey at Thanksgiving.")
declare (inf., to declare)
English (noun)
To distinguish the dialect of English spoken in the United States from that of Great Britain, one often refers to "American English" and "British English." Besides slight differences in vocabulary, accent and intonation, there are also some slight spelling differences as well ("center" [U.S.] vs. "centre" [G.B.], "realize" vs. "realise," "color" vs. "colour," etc.).

"First" is an ordinal number which corresponds to "one." It is commonly abbreviated as "1st." You'll study the ordinals in Chapter 4 of this course.

In order to point out something nearby, usually within reach, use the expressions "here is" (sing.) and "here are" (plur.). (E.g.: "Here is my passport"; "Here are your keys.")

When you greet people in the U.S., it is customary to use "Hello," which is more formal than "hi." However, "hi" is frequently used, even when meeting someone for the first time. At the end of a conversation, a simple "good-bye" or "bye" will suffice.

Noted as a contraction (contr.) of "I am," "am" is the first person singular form of "to be" ("I am, he/she/it is, we are, you are, they are").

Another way to express the idea of a great quantity is to use the word "many," "several," or "lots of" (slang) followed by a noun. (E.g.: "Many people," "several flights," "lots of cars," etc.)
luggage (noun)
"Luggage" refers to a set of "suitcases" and "bags" with which one travels.
may (modal aux.)
There are many polite expressions that you will frequently hear and use such as "May I?" ("Can I?,") "I would like...," and "Would you...?" ("Could you...?"). A handy phrase to remember when making a request is "May I?" "May I" can be followed by many different infinitives, as in "May I have something to drink?" and "May I use your telephone?"

"Me" is the object pronoun form of the subject pronoun "I."

In "You present the card the Immigration Agent gave to you." Another way to express the same idea is to use the verb "to show," "to give," or "to hand over."

In "Yes, that's right." "Right," in this instance, means "correct." "Right" also refers to the direction opposite of "left."

"Room" can refer to a specific place in a structure or building. It can also refer to "space" in general.

Besides having to do with one's vision, "to see" may also be used to express the idea of understanding, as in "I see the difference."

In "You stand in line." In this case, "stand" may refer not only to your physical state ("standing in line"), but may also convey the idea of "waiting." "To take a stand" implies choosing a position with regard to a "controversial issue."

In "Thank you." Another way to "give one's thanks" is to say "thanks" or "thank you very much." You may also say "I appreciate it" ("it" refers to "your help").

"There are" (followed by plural nouns)" and "there is" (followed by sing. nouns) appear frequently in English. These expressions point out things or people (as in "There is my friend, Nancy.") or simply to indicate -- or question -- the existence of something (e.g., "Is there any money in the bank?"/"There are too many people here.").

Story
You arrive at Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport after a long flight. You leave the plane and enter the airport terminal. There are a lot of people speaking English. You hope you can understand them and that they can also understand you. You follow the signs to U.S. Immigration and Customs and go into a large room. You stand in line with other non-U.S. citizens. Finally, it's your turn; you are about to have your first conversation with an American.
Cultural notes
As in most countries, going through customs in the U.S. is a two-part process. First, you will encounter an agent of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), who will want to see your passport and visa. At some airports, especially New York, Miami, and Los Angeles, these agents are multi-lingual. However, you should be prepared to use English as much as possible.
Travelers from most countries (Western Europe, Canada, Japan) can pick up a visa at the border when they reach the U.S. If you are unsure about this, it is a good idea to check with your U.S. Consulate. Your visa will be valid for 90 days and cannot be extended. Shortly before you arrive in the U.S., you will be given a small white I-94 card on board the plane. After you fill out the card, you will give it to the INS agent at the airport. He will keep one copy and the other copy will be stapled in your passport. The I-94 card is a record of your arrival and departure dates. The date of your departure is the date when the card expires. You will give up the I-94 when you leave the U.S.
If you anticipate spending more than 90 days in the United States, you should apply for B-1/B-2 visa. This visa can be extended for up to one year. It is primarily intended for business persons and tourists.
You'll soon discover that the United States, while racially and ethnically diverse, is basically a monolingual country. If you plan to travel in the U.S. or to interact extensively with Americans, you will want to know as much English as possible. Most Americans are friendly and outgoing. They will usually go out of their way to help you if you have a question or a problem.
When going though U.S. Customs, be calm and patient. Try your best to communicate with the agents. Don't be concerned if you are asked to open your suitcases.

Lesson 2 «Changing Money»

Americans have many words to talk about money. International banks and trading houses refer to "currency." In everyday life, people normally refer to "money." Some popular slang words include "greenbacks," "dough," "bread," and "bucks." You should watch where you use these words, however, and talk about "money," "dollars," and "cents" in formal situations. Don't confuse "bills," referring to paper currency, with "bill(s)" which refer(s) to money that is owed to someone (as in "I had to pay the bill for the washing machine.").

When exchanging money into U.S. dollars, you will be receiving "coins" and "bills" (coins consist of "pennies," "nickels," "dimes," and "quarters"; the following denominations in bills are available: $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, $20.00, $50.00 and $100.00. More detailed information dealing with denominations can be found in the Grammar section of Chapter 8.

"Cash" normally refers to "bills," "coins," and "currency" as opposed to "checks" or "credit cards."

"Checks" may refer to both "personal checks" as well as "traveler's checks." When you are finished eating at a restaurant, you may ask your server for the "check" or the "bill."

When you are in "public places" such as airports, bus stations, or government buildings, you will see all "exits" to the outside clearly marked so that you can quickly leave in case of an emergency. The opposite of "exit" is "entrance." With respect to entering a building, many doors are marked "push" (the direction away from you) or "pull" (the direction toward you).

When you are traveling by car along an interstate highway, you will frequently come across "motor inns" or "motels" which will be less expensive than a hotel (and often less comfortable).

"Let's" is used to form the imperative form for the first person plural ("let us"). (E.g.: "let's leave," "let's talk," "let's go," etc.)
like (inf., to like)
When you say you "like" someone or something, you can imply a feeling of even greater intensity by using the verb "to love." (E.g.: "I like my English class." vs. "I really love my English teacher.")

Note the difference in meaning between "to look for" and "to look": "What are you looking for? --I'm looking for a sport shirt." (in this case, you are looking for something specific); "I'm going to look some more." (i.e., to look around, you're not looking for anything special).

Words like "money" and "change" are considered singular when used with verbs (e.g., "Money is the root of all evil." / "Change is not available in this machine.").
