Card 5.

1. Let’s talk about education. What can you tell us about the system of education in Belarus?

 

Belarussian have always shown a great concern for education. It is insured by compulsory secondary schools, vocational schools and higher educational establishments. Education in Belarus is compulsory to the 9th form inclusive. The stages of compulsory schooling in Belarus are primary education, secondary education and senior high school. After finishing the 9th form one can go to a vocational school. After finishing 11th form one can go on in higher education.

 

2. Do you agree that Belarussian secondary school provides a person with good education?

 

Yes, I do. I agree that our secondary school provide a person with good education. But in my opinion it would be better in senior classes. Pupils may choose subjects to their abilities in order to receive profound knowledge in one or other subjects.

 

3. What questions would you like to ask your British friend about the system of education in Britain?

 

1) At what ages must British children go to school?

2) What is private school?

3) What education is compulsory?

4. What can you advise your friend to become an educated person?

 

I can advise my friend to be more attentive at the lessons, listen to your teacher more carefully and to read more books, which broaden our skills.

 

5. Today some people think a good education is not very important. What is your point of view?

 

As for me I disagree. I think a good education is very important. If you don’t have a good education you can’t find a well paid job, so you can face many difficulties which can prevent your wishes to become a reality.

1. Let’s talk about studying at school. What school subjects do you study at school? What are your favourite and least favourite ones? Why?

I study different subjects at school such as Russian, Belorussian, Russian and Belorussian literature, History, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Biology and others. My favourite subject is ___________________________, because _________________________________________________________________. And my least favourite subject is ____________________________, because______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.

2. Do you agree that your school differs from any other school you know? Why (not)?

Oh, no, I don’t. My school doesn’t differ from any other school. It is a three-storied building. We have a headmaster’s office, a library, dance classroom, cloakroom and some classrooms on the ground floor, a canteen, a gym, a teacher’s room and some classrooms on the second floor, and computer classroom and other classrooms on the third floor.

 

3. Imagine you are talking to your peer from England about schooling. What questions would you like to ask?

1. Do you like your teachers?

2. What is your favourite school subject?

3. What school subjects do you study at school?

4.

4. What can you advise your friend who id not very good at any school subject and wants to get better marks in it?

To get good marks you need to discipline yourself to participate in class. Always do your homework, don’t miss classes and ask for help from your classmates and teachers.

 

5. What is your idea of an ideal school?

To my mind an ideal school offers excellent facilities, high teaching standards and a friendly atmosphere which helps to achieve great academic results.

 

 

Card 7

1. Let’s talk about school traditions. What school traditions are there at your school?

 

Well, there are some school traditions at my school. For example: we usually stand up when a teacher or a visitor comes into the classroom. It’s a tradition to look after school building and its furniture. It is a tradition to take part in regional sporting events, concerts, festivals and subject weeks. Also we help war veterans and we visit memorials.

2. Do you agree that it is a good tradition at school to organize the last bell for the pupils of the 11th form?

Of course I do. It is a very good tradition to organize a school bell for the pupils of the 11th form. The last day at school is a remarkable day for them. They say “Good bye” to school forever, thank their teachers and parents. The last bell helps the pupils to remember this day at school.

 

3. What questions would you like to ask a British teenager about his/her school traditions?

 

1. Have you got any school traditions?

2. Is it a tradition at your school to wear uniform?

3. What sporting traditions do you have?

 

 

4. What traditional school rules can you advise your friend to observe to be a good and disciplined pupil?

 

I would like to advise my friend to observe such traditions as: 1. to come on time to school; 2. always bring books, daybook and exercise-book; 3. to do homework and to behave well at school; 4. to be polite, to keep the school clean and tidy; 5. not to miss classes and not to smoke on the school ground.

 

5. What do you think about the wearing a school uniform. Is it a good tradition?

 

Of course, it’s a good tradition. A school uniform disciplines and unites pupils. But as for me, I hate wearing it, because I feel myself better in jeans, jackets and sweaters.

 

 

Card 8

1. Let’s talk about your future career. What is an ideal job to your mind?

 

As for me interesting, creative and well-paid job is the most important thing. I would like to become a reporter and work for television. It gives an opportunity to meet interesting and famous people and to travel round the world.

 

2. Do you agree that you must do well at school to get a job of a reporter?

 

Of course, I do. A university education is necessary for making a good career in future. I think such subjects as History, Geography, Languages and Literature are the most important, so you have to put a lot of effort to do them well.

 

3. Imagine that you are an employer. What questions would you like to ask the applicant, who wants to get job in your office?

 

1. Are your energetic and ambitious?

2. Can you drive a car, operate a computer?

3. Do you speak any foreign language?

 

4. Your friend hasn’t made choice in choosing career yet. What can you advise him?

 

Well, there are a lot of alternatives. You can enter vocational and technical schools, colleges, institutes and universities. Try to find the most suitable profession.

 

5. Speaking a foreign language and having computer skills give you a better chance to have a desirable job. Isn’t so? What do you think about this?

 

I absolutely agree. I think these skills are necessary in modern life, especially foreign languages, because you can find job almost all over the world.

 

Card 9

1. Let’s talk about life in the city and in the country. What is the place you live in? What are the advantages of living there?

 

O.K. I live in Vitebsk. It is one of the largest and oldest regional centers in Belarus. I think there are a lot of advantages of living there. You can get a good education and better chances of employment in Vitebsk. There is a wide range of entertainments and a lot of places to visit.

 

2. They say “Big cities have got big problems”. Do you agree with this quotation? Why (not)?

 

Of course, I do. There are too many people and too much noise, pollution, criminality and traffic problems in the city. The air isn’t fresh enough. So people suffer from these problems.

 

3. What questions would you like to ask a teenager from the countryside if you want to know about disadvantages of living there?

 

1. Is it boring to live in the village?

2. Can you go to a disco?

3. Can you buy all you need in the village?

 

4. What would you like to advise your grandparents to live in the city or in the country?

 

I would like to advise my grandparents to live in the country, because there is no noise, pollution and traffic problems. The air is fresh and the landscape is beautiful there.

 

5. Your peer from the countryside wants to get a high education in your town. What advantages of getting high education can you recommend him/her?

 

In our town there are a lot of universities to enter. You can choose Pedagogical or Technological University, Medical University or Veterinary Academy. Or you can enter International Institute of Labour and Social Relations.
