I. Reading
Latiff was the poorest beggar of the village.
One sunny morning the king appeared in the square where Latiff was having a nap in the shade of an oak. The king approached to the poorest of his men and his servant told him that that man was the most respected person in the town because of his knowledge. The king offered Latiff to answer his question and get a golden coin if the answer would be correct. The king asked a question that he could not solve himself. Latiff's response was wise and creative. The king was surprised and left the coin at the feet of the beggar. The next day he came to Latiff again to ask him another question and again he got a wise and quick answer. So the king asked Latiff to be his adviser and help him in making decisions. He promised that Latiff would be respected and able to leave whenever he wanted. Latiff accepted this proposal.
II. Writing
Dear Jane,
Hi! How are you? I'm writing to tell you my wonderful news. I have enrolled in the spring language course for international students. The course is in Cambridge. So I'll stay there for two weeks in March and April. I'm arriving at Gatwick on March 20th. Our programme includes the educational visit to London on Saturday, the 26th. Could we meet that day? The programme manager said that we would have a few free hours in London.
What is the weather like in the UK at this time of the year? What clothes do you think I should take with me?
Write me soon. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Julia
III. Speaking
One day I started to feel ill in the morning. I was pale. I had a splitting headache and a sore throat. Besides, I was sneezing and coughing badly. I took the temperature. It was very high. My mum phoned our family doctor, Mrs Petrova. She is always asked to come when somebody is ill in the family.
The doctor came to our place in an hour. She examined me, listened to my heart and lungs, looked at my eyes and ears. I was diagnosed with a bad cold. The doctor told me to stay in bed for a week, gargle my throat three times a day, drink hot milk with butter and honey. Then she wrote out a prescription for some medicines: pills, drops, and mixture. She also advised me to take a scalding footbath, and to have hot tea with raspberry jam. That would keep my fever down.
I followed the prescribed treatment to avoid serious complications. Every day I took a tablespoonful of mixture three times a day and some pills. In two days I was better and in a week I recovered from my illness. The result of my X-ray examination and blood analysis were quite normal.
Now I've started to take care of myself. I go in for sports because sports make me strong, healthy and cheerful. Every day I do my morning exercises and have a cold rubdown to prevent myself from catching a cold. There is a good proverb: "An apple a day keeps doctor away". That's why I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables.
