Kharkiv National University of Civil Engineering and Architecturewas established on the 12th of June, 1930. Before 1994 it was named Civil Engineering Institute. Originally there were four faculties: Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Sanitary Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Faculty of Geodesy. In 1932 the Institute constructed its own building (now on this place National University of Radio Electronics, 14, Lenina Ave). There were 800 students in 1933, in 1934 - 1,200.

During the Great Patriotic war (1941-1945) most of the students and members of the staff defended the Motherland. When entering the main building you can see the names of 40 heroes. The Institute was evacuated and returned to Kharkiv in 1943. The educational building, laboratories, and the hostel were destroyed. The Institute moved to the building in 40, Sumska St. designed by the project of the architect O.G.Molokin in 1927. It was almost ruined and the students and the staff themselves restored it. In 1944 there were only 404 students.

Now there is also an educational building in 48, Artema St. The University trains civil engineers, architects, designers, engineer-technologists, engineer-mechanics, economists, ecologists, managers and others. There are the followingfaculties: Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Sanitary Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Economics and Management, Faculty of Military Training, Faculty of Part Time Studies. There are also post-graduate departments. The total number of the students trained is more than 50,000. Now about 7,000 students are studying.

Deans of the faculties and Heads of departments are the well-known researchers. There is the Rector and Vice-Rectors. The teaching staff include about 500 members (among them 65 Professors and Doctors of Science and 17 Academicians).

Since 1950 over 1,500 international students have been trained. The University also has international links with many universities and institutes in Ukraine and abroad (Russia, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Poland,).

The period of study lasts 5 years except architects (6 years). The University trains Bachelors, Specialists, and Masters. The academic year consists of two semesters and winter and summer sessions. During the first two years students study mathematics, physics, foreign languages, history of Ukraine, etc. Then they are trained for special subjects.

Students are provided with all necessary facilities. There are a lot well-equipped laboratories, lecture halls and specialized computer classes. Out-of-town students can get accommodation at the hostels. The library has a lot of books. There is a large assembly-hall and a museum. There is also a canteen to eat and relax a little.

Sport at the University is very popular and includes basketball, football, handball, athletics, aerobics, power-lifting, table tennis, boxing and others. There is also a students' club, jazz band, dance and other societies. The students have the opportunity to take part in theatrical performances, parties and art competitions.
