My flat. About my family and myself

ABOUT MY FAMILY and MYSELF

My full name is Kovalenko Stanislav Vladimirovich. But nobody addresses me like that. My parents and friends call me Stas for short. I was born on the 28th of January 198... into a family of a teacher and an engineer. My parents lived in Poltava at that time. Then our family moved to Kharkiv.

My family is a large one. There are six of us: a mother, a father, a sister, a brother, a grandmother and me.

My mother, Olga Alexandrovna, works in a college now, she is a teacher of physics and maths. She is a good-looking woman rather tall and slim. My mother is forty-five now but she looks much younger.

As to my father, Vladimir Petrovich, he works as a computer programmer and is very experienced in this field. My father is forty-seven. He is a broad-shouldered tall man with fair hair and grey eyes. He is very handy with many things. He can fix almost everything: a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a fridge, a TV-set and so on.

My parents have been married for twenty-six years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, sports and films. But both of them love nature. When we were kids, our parents used to take us out into the country where they taught us to love and respect nature.

My elder sister Helen is twenty-four. She is married and has got a family of her own. She works as an accountant in a bank. Her husband, Oleg, is a dentist. They have got twins: a daughter and a son. So I am an uncle. My niece and nephew go to nursery school.

Sergei, my younger brother is eleven. He is a schoolboy. He wants to become a vet but he is not sure yet. Three months ago he dreamed of being a fireman.

My grandmother used to be a nurse, but she retired some years ago. She lives with us and helps to run the house. My granny is very fond of knitting.

Put it into a few words, we are a united and friendly family. We are deeply attached to one another.

As for me I have entered the University this year. I am a busy person now. I have to do a lot of things: to attend lectures and classes, to prepare for seminars, laboratory works and tests. So I haven’t got much free time. Speaking about my hobby, I should say I enjoy doing many things: reading, riding a bike, playing the guitar, listening to music.

I have got some friends and I meet them as often as I can possibly manage. Most of them are my schoolmates. We made friends many years ago. We always give a helping hand when one of us is in need. We go to parties together, or just walk once in a while. I hope to find new friends at the University.

MY FLAT

We have a nice flat in a block of flats. Our house is situated not far from the centre of our city. Our flat is on the fourth floor. It has all modern facilities: central heating, electricity, gas, cold and hot running water and a telephone.

There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall. There is also a balcony and we can enjoy a lovely view of the park.

The living room is the largest and most comfortable room in the flat. It has got a balcony too. In the middle of the room there is a table with some chairs around it. To the right of the room there is a wall unit which has several sections: a sideboard, a wardrobe and some shelves. At the opposite wall there is a coffee table with a television, a sofa with two armchairs.

The bedroom is smaller and not very light as there is only one window in it. In this room there are two beds, a wardrobe and a dressing–table with a big mirror. There is a thick carpet on the floor and plain light curtains on the window. The curtains on the window match the wall-paper. The built-in furniture doesn’t take much space in the room.

My room is a nice place for both rest and work.

There is not much furniture in it, only the most necessary. On the left there is a built-in wardrobe and a sofa, next to it – a desk with a computer and a chair in front of it. Opposite the wardrobe there is a bookcase full of books, newspapers, journals and magazines.

Our kitchen is big and light and has a lot of cupboards. There is a washing machine, a fridge, a cooker and a sink, but there isn’t a dishwasher. There are many plants in our kitchen. They are everywhere – on the window-sill and on the walls. In the middle of the kitchen there is a table with some stools round it.

I like our flat very much. And I like English proverb: ″My home is my castle″ because my flat is, indeed, my castle.
