Ideas for Action Competition

How Should We Finance the Future?

This competition of ideas is sponsored by the Carol and Lawrence Zicklin Center at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, in collaboration with the World Bank.

Please visit http://www.zicklincenter.org/ for updates

Competition Highlights

The objective is to leverage the inspiration of young leaders and young professionals to propose innovative ideas about financing the Post-2015 development agenda. These ideas should be grounded in existing or proposed empirical evidence, with high potential for impact.

Submissions should assess the relevance, importance, and challenges of the proposed financing solutions.

When?

Competition prompt released to teams by end of November, 2014

Deadline for Submissions: December 22, 2014

Finalists Announced: February 2, 2015

Winner(s) Announced: March 15, 2015

How?

Please visit http://www.zicklincenter.org/ for information on Ideas for Action activities and competition updates. More details will be released as the competition period approaches.

Priority Areas

The key theme of the competition is outlined in the World Bank’s “Financing the Post-2015 Development Agenda”, and will focus on four pillars of financing:

1. Domestic resource mobilization

2. Better and smarter aid

3. Private finance for development

4. Innovative sources of financing

In addition to the four ‘pillars’, the Zicklin Center is also including an additional, complementary area that participants may wish to address:

· Business and Development Innovations; this can include but is not limited to:

o Grafting and implementing Business-Led Collective Action initiatives

o Sustainable competitiveness through shared prosperity

o Business and Development Agencies/Foundations Innovative Partnership Models

The prompt that will guide team submissions will not be released until late November, however, it will correspond very closely to the items above.

Knowledge-Sharing and Learning

Prior to the competition submission deadline of December 22nd, a series of engagement activities will take place that introduce some of the components of the competition theme, “Financing the Post-2015 Development Agenda”.

These activities – short videos and articles as well as other shared resources – will seek to engage both those young professionals who intend to compete in December, and also those simply interested in global development. They will be extremely relevant to the final competition prompt, and all individuals considering entering the competition are highly encouraged to engage with this component of Ideas for Action.

Teams

Teams are self-selected and made up of 3 to 5 members, ranging in age from 18-35 years old.
